I see clients 3 days a week, sometimes 4.

That number sounds dreamy, except that's only one part of the job.

The other days are spent doing bookkeeping, marketing, laundry, taxes, cleaning, content, continuing education, admin and keeping my own body in shape for the work.

Some therapists can sustain forty hours of hands on work. Personally, I'm not one of them. 🤣

Once you factor in the unpaid hours and the overhead, our hourly rate looks very different from what it seems on the outside.

So if the "hourly rate" of a massage session seems like a lot, just remember the hour on the table is part of a much larger week. 💜

This is a template for use for small local service providers on Kaua’i. We’re very grateful for all the blessings we still have after Hurricane Lowell, but we are all still impacted negatively by the devastation to the island’s infrastructure and our economy. If you want us to be around when the island recovers, help us out, even if you can’t make an appointment.

Randomly, a client sent me a small amount on Venmo and wrote “Lowell Support 💓”. This meant a lot to me as many clients cannot keep appointments due to the devastation that either they themselves or the island is facing.

I then turned around and Venmo’d a service provider in my life that I know has no power or water and also can’t work. I’ll share their response in my stories. 🥹

Many of us have had to cancel workshops, services, product sales, and issue refunds all while our rents, software subscriptions, and insurance payments are still due. I am hearing business interruption insurance only kicks in if we have physical damages to our own premises.

If you have any of the following people in your daily life and know they cannot work or their business is suffering impacts, and you have even $5 to spare, kindly consider them at this time. They want to get back in action and earn it but may not be able to due to circumstances out of their control. Mahalo nui loa!

Our community is special and I know we all help however we can.

Impacted small and individual businesses (add anyone I’ve forgotten to the list):
-Massage Therapists
-Hairdressers/barbers
-Personal Trainers
-Intructors
-Small group fitness providers
-Cleaners
-Chefs
-Drivers
-Nail Techs
-Estheticians/waxers/etc.
-Small businesses w no damage but still can’t open fully.
Comment if I missed your service type.

Was your business on Kaua’i detrimentally impacted financially by Hurricane Lowell?

S3xual harassment is something that comes up in conversation CONSTANTLY among female massage therapists.

I’m sooooo tired of seeing my fellow female LMTs have scary experiences and people treating it like a rite of passage (it isn't).

It’s time for us to be loud and direct about it until we all feel safe.

Personally, worrying less about hurting feelings, "being unprofessional" or losing money and getting very clear about what I require to feel safe has been one of the best decisions I made for my practice.

If something has happened to you, please know that it was not a failure on your part.

People will behave how they want to behave, but we can normalize using our free will to the max if someone is making us uncomfortable. ⚔️

Underrated massage therapy hack: GET A MIRROR. 🪞

This is the fastest way to correct your body mechanics while you work, especially when learning a new technique like Sarga Bodywork.

Sometimes I get so focused on my client's body, that I forget my own.
As someone with neurodivergence, my proprioceptive ability varies.
Catching a glimpse in the mirror keeps me accountable to my own needs while I work.

Body mechanics play into your longevity. For a small investment, a mirror can literally extend the length of your career.

Learning Sarga, we spend SO much time thinking about how it feels for our clients. Rarely do we think how the work feels for us.

It feels like dancing, like moving through the tissue like a surfer on water while being hugged by the silk.

There’s a deep, nonverbal dialogue happening through touch - inviting the tissue to relax, release and be held.

I've noticed that the practitioners who stay with Sarga long term are the ones who love how it feels to GIVE massage - something most people don't take into account when they're first considering training.

I forget sometimes when the schedule is full and the days blur together. But then I drop back in during each session and remember why I started. 💜

I’ve tried, tested or owned every massage or self-care tool at some point.

Some of them have totally earned their place in my treatment room but I never let myself depend on any of it.

Healing traditions around the world produced remarkable results for centuries without any of it for good reason.

Don't get me wrong - good equipment can support good work. But it cannot replace human presence and co-regulation.

In my experience, presence (a skill that can be trained) is always the magic ingredient. 🪄

I don't think any of us "make it" or cross some invisible finish line where endless relief awaits on the other side.

What usually happens is we just keep showing up and over time, things get better.

There aren't enough voices out here talking about how to build a SUSTAINABLE massage practice (probably because it's mostly just doing unglamorous things consistently 😂).

From someone who rebuilt their practice from the bottom up after burnout, here's what I’d tell myself if I could go back in time:

1️⃣ Set your work hours for yourself and protect them.
2️⃣ Show up during your hours, don’t work beyond them by default.
3️⃣ Use an online booking system with automated reminders (so simple, so underrated).
4️⃣ Choose one primary practice location.
5️⃣ Only reschedule when you genuinely cannot work.
6️⃣ Track your rebooking rate and your financials.
7️⃣ Know your community.
8️⃣ Keep your policies visible and consistent.
9️⃣ Treat your body like a business asset.

The table work matters, but it’s not what builds a practice.

Showing up is.

Play the long game. 💜

Sarga is NOT about putting maximum force and pressure into the body. 🚫

"No pain, no gain" has already been scientifically disproven.

Fascia tightens when the body feels threatened - that's literally its job.

Driving force into it just creates more of what you're trying to release.

What I've actually found after years of working this way, is that fascia only responds positively to being met where it's at.

When you move slowly, you can be present and actually listen to the tissue. It's something you can physically see and feel happen in real time.

No amount of force can get you to that result any faster. 💜

Loving your work DOES NOT insulate you from burnout.

My experience is that loving your work means you're more likely to miss the warning signs. 🚩

The physical accumulation comes first, then the emotional accumulation of holding space for others while denying yourself rest and then the mental accumulation of running a business topples it.

By the time I could admit it, I had a long road to recovery ahead of me. 😅

What pulled me out (after an initial rest period) was change. Something that made me inspired about my own practice again.

For me, Sarga reoriented everything and renewed my professional spark again.

I still hit that point occasionally (as does everyone). The difference now is I catch it earlier and I know what to do with it.

If burnout symptoms are creeping up on you, don’t wait for the crash. Change something now, even if it’s small. Thank me later. 💜
