Happy National Dog Day Oliver!

Shout Out to Oliver therapy dog at Four Winds Hospital.

As Medical Director, Oliver comes with me when I meet with patients on each cottage where he brings smiles to patients and staff.

Because Oliver has a history of trauma and takes psychiatric medication for his anxiety, patients really relate to him. I joke I am Oliver’s human support person. Oliver usually walks around with a stuffed animal in his mouth - it’s like his baby blanket.

Oliver loves to give love and get love even more than eating!

It’s Four Winds Family Friday:

We celebrated the retirement of Fran Manning, RN, nurse extraordinaire who worked at Four Winds for over 50 years. At her retirement party, Fran shared stories of how 50 years ago, psychiatric patients were allowed to have a small amount of wine with their dinner, they took trips into town (one patient returned to the hospital two days later), had formal night where men wore tuxedos and women fancy ballgowns and ballroom danced in Mainhouse. All patients smoked ci******es so Fran joked that’s how she got her patients to behave by letting them know she would not let them out for a smoke unless they listened to her. Staff reminisced how Fran was one of those nurses with warmth and compassion but patients listened to her because she took no BS. Fran keeps renewing her RN license in case she gets bored and plans to train a therapy dog to bring to Four Winds Hospital so Oliver the Four Winds therapy dog has a friend to help him visit all the cottages. We will miss you Fran but wish you all the best and can’t wait to see you with your new dog best friend :))

Staff and patients enjoyed another summer BBQ where senior leadership got to thank staff with food. Dr K half jokes that she is the patients and staff members Jewish mother so she needs to make sure they all get fed well :)
