Patrick Kirby was born with a rare heart condition that, decades later, became a serious threat to his health.

After years of monitoring, tests showed his condition had worsened. Patrick was referred to Anthony Estrera, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon at UT Physicians, who reviewed more than a decade of his medical history and developed a plan to protect his heart and future.

Just months later, Patrick underwent surgery to replace his damaged heart valve and repair part of his aorta. After six days in the hospital, he was on his way home and toward recovery.

Today, Patrick is back to enjoying life, crediting Dr. Estrera and his care team with helping him get back to making special memories with the people he loves.

Finding time for a full 30-minute workout can be challenging, but staying active doesn’t have to mean exercising all at once. Short bursts of movement, such as taking the stairs, doing a few squats or going for a brisk walk, can help break up your day and support healthy habits.

UT Physicians cardiologist Zohair Hasan, MD, explains how these small moments of activity, or “exercise snacks”, can add up over time and help you take the first step toward better heart health. Learn more at the link in the comments.

For families navigating Down syndrome care, having the right support in one place can make a meaningful difference.

UTHealth Houston is developing a new multidisciplinary clinic, planned for early 2027, to help families access more coordinated care through a centralized team familiar with the unique needs of people with Down syndrome. Families and caregivers are invited to share their experiences and priorities through a needs assessment survey.

Read more about the new expansion and take the survey to share what matters most to your family. https://www.utphysicians.com/community-input-guides-pediatric-down-syndrome-clinic/
