Alzheimer's gets the headlines. Vascular dementia gets second place, and most families do not know what it is until it shows up in the family.

Vascular dementia happens when blood vessels in the brain are damaged, often by stroke or by repeated small strokes that go unnoticed. The result is cognitive decline that does not always follow a straight line. One day Mom seems fine. The next day she does not make sense. The unpredictability is the disease, not your imagination.

For families with cardiovascular history, this is the type of dementia worth understanding early. Many of the same habits that prevent stroke also slow vascular dementia.

Could this be what is affecting Mom? As discussed in our last article (What is dementia?) there are many different types of dementia. Most people think of Alzhe

A family once assumed Ted Fletcher must be used to all of this by now. His answer did not wait a beat. No, I am not.

That single line is the heart of how Sycamore Creek Ranch is different. Ted believes the real failure in this industry is people who are not emotionally engaged, who move through the work on autopilot. Our caregivers do not. They know your loved one. They know the stories, the habits, the small things that make a person themselves. To them, no one here is a patient. They are a friend.

As Ted puts it, the day he becomes used to this is the day he should be done.

That is who cares for your family at our Cinco Ranch home in Katy, where space is open now.

Sometimes the decision makes itself, one hard fact at a time.

For Lisa Hay, it was not one moment. It was a gathering of them. Her dad was living close by, on the family property. Then he began to wander. There is a pond. There are woods. He started to frighten her mother. Each fact stacked on the one before it until the math was impossible to argue with. It was not safe anymore. It was time.

If you are adding up those same facts right now, you are not giving up on your parent. You are seeing clearly.

Our Cinco Ranch home in Katy has space available now, 16 residents, caregivers who know each one by name.

Here is something families rarely say out loud. After the move, alongside the worry and the missing, there is relief. And that relief can feel like the most shameful thing in the world, like proof you wanted to be rid of them. You did not. What you wanted was to stop drowning. The relief you feel is not a lack of love. It is your body finally exhaling after carrying something no one person was built to carry. You are allowed to feel it. You are allowed to sleep. You are allowed to breathe again.
When you are ready to set that weight down, text TOUR to 832-791-1577 and we will plan a visit to our Cinco Ranch home in Katy.

The person you married is still in there. And also, slowly, they are not.

Caring for a spouse with dementia is its own kind of grief. You are losing them while they are still here. You are answering the same question for the fifth time today. You are sleeping in the same bed with someone who, some mornings, does not quite know who you are.

You are also, somehow, still showing up. Still cooking. Still helping with buttons. Still saying I love you to a face that may or may not register the words.

This is one of the hardest journeys a marriage can take. We wrote about it for the spouses who are walking it.

Everything on the market felt like a hospital.

When Ted Fletcher went looking for a place for his own loved one, the same thing was missing everywhere. The at-home feel. The options were sterile and institutional, the kind of place where you walk in and any sense of dignity drains out of the room. Nothing on the market felt like a home.

So he and his partner set out to build the thing that did not exist. A mission took shape along the way: create a place where a loved one can live life to the fullest every day, regardless of the level of care they need.

That is how all six of our homes are run, 16 residents each, caregivers who know every one of them by name. Our Cinco Ranch home in Katy has space available now.

It started around 2010, with phone calls that reset every time.

Scott Wright would talk to his mom, and by the next call everything they had covered was gone. Soon she could not keep her own medications straight, or manage her husband's Parkinson's schedule, the kind you have to time precisely around meals. Everyone knew something was wrong. A neurologist finally named it: early-onset Alzheimer's.

If you have watched that fog roll in with someone you love, you already know the quiet worry underneath it. You are not overreacting. You are paying attention.

That worry is where Sycamore Creek Ranch began. Our Cinco Ranch home in Katy has space available now, 16 residents, caregivers who know each one by name.

Before you accept a dementia diagnosis, rule these out.

A urinary tract infection in an older adult does not always present with the symptoms doctors look for. It can present as confusion, agitation, and personality change. Treat the UTI, the symptoms vanish.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency. Sleep apnea. Medication interactions. Long-term alcohol effects. All five of these can produce dementia-like symptoms in seniors. All five are treatable. Some are completely reversible.

This is one of the most important conversations to have with a doctor before settling on a dementia diagnosis. Get the workup. Rule out the reversible.

There are several conditions that often mimic the symptoms of dementia. These conditions may also cause changes in memory, behavior and personality chang

For Ted Fletcher, the moment did not arrive as forgetting. It arrived as safety.

His mom reached a point where she simply could not live on her own anymore. The answer seemed obvious, move her into his home, and it was hard on her, because she never wanted to be a burden on the family. He told her again and again that she was not, that she had invested in him his whole life and this was the least he could do. It stayed hard for her anyway.

What she actually needed was her independence back, in a place built to protect it. That is the idea Sycamore Creek Ranch was built around.

When the diagnosis comes, it can feel like the good days are behind you. We want you to know something we get to witness every single day. Joy still happens. A favorite song comes on and a face lights up. A hand reaches for yours during a card game. There is laughter at the dinner table over something that made no sense at all. Memory loss changes a lot, but it does not erase the person or the moments of pure delight they can still have. When the daily caregiving is carried by someone else, you get to be there for more of those moments, not fewer.

Come see what those days look like. Text TOUR to 832-791-1577 and we will plan a visit to our Cinco Ranch home in Katy.
