I have been sitting with Jess Hilarious's new book, 'Til Death Do We Parent, since the interviews started dropping and the conversation she is sparking is the one I have with co-parents in my office every single week.
Jess is putting language to something most co-parents feel but rarely say out loud:
👉🏾 Your job does not end when your child turns 18.
So many parents are white-knuckling their way through co-parenting conflict, telling themselves they just have to make it to the finish line. But the way you and your co-parent communicate right now is shaping how your child understands love, conflict, and connection for the rest of their life.
Jess is also right that you should never force a relationship just for the kids.
But here is what I help clients work through in session:
✨ Not forcing the relationship does not mean walking away from the communication.
✨ You do not have to be friends. You do have to be able to talk about pickup times, school decisions, and the emotional needs of a child who is watching both of you every single day.
That is the work I do.
If the title of her book hit something in you, this one is for you.
