We’re back with another informative “Let Me Tell You Something Tuesday”! This week’s topic helps visualize why people with hearing loss may have a hard time understanding speech.

“Let Me Tell You About The Speech Banana”

The speech banana is a tool used by audiologists to help patients and families understand speech sounds. Each speech sound has a designated frequency. The higher frequencies are usually the first to go when people experience hearing loss, which would be the /s, f, p, h/ and unvoiced “th” speech sounds. As hearing loss becomes more profound, sounds like /z,v,g,k/, and discerning between /m/ and /n/ and /d/ and /b/ increase in difficulty.

Missing these sounds can impact someone’s ability to grasp verbal conversation. It is fatiguing to the brain trying to fill in the gaps of conversation that your ears are missing.

If you feel like you are having trouble understanding conversation in quiet settings, or in busy restaurants, or at a distance, schedule a hearing test. Even if it may not feel like it's time to pull the trigger on hearing aids just yet, it is helpful to your audiologist to have a baseline to monitor the possibility of progressive loss.

To give a better perspective of your loved ones, read the following text again outloud, only this time, the high frequency sounds are missing:

“Let -e Tell You A-ou- The -peech Ba-a-a”

Because of the context clues, and the fact that you have read this sentence before, your brain is able to fill in the gaps of what is missing. Same applies to spoken language. Without clues like heightened volume, lip reading, and situational context, these gaps become harder to fill.

On this weeks "Let Me Tell You Something Tuesday"...

"Let us tell you about Lydia"

If you tuned in last time, you learned about Robyn—and how we quickly discovered that what we really needed at our front desk was an octopus-type human. Someone who could answer the phone, check patients in, check patients out, schedule appointments, handle hearing aids, solve problems, calm people down, and somehow remember what everyone had for breakfast three years ago. Basically, someone with eight arms and the patience of a saint!

Enter Lydia, in January 2018.

I was about four months pregnant with my second child, Harrison, and I knew I needed to find someone who could keep the wheels on the bus while I was out on maternity leave. Unlike everyone else on our team, we found Lydia through an Indeed listing. We interviewed several people, but Lydia stood out from the very beginning.

For starters, she had previous hearing aid experience—which is a rare and precious commodity when you’re hiring for the front office. But even more than that, she was willing to do whatever needed to be done to help our patients and our office.

And then there was her calm.

Lydia is just…calm. Naturally calm. Unshakably calm. The kind of calm that makes you wonder if she has a secret meditation room somewhere in the back that the rest of us don’t know about.

She could be juggling 15 things at once, have the phone ringing, three people standing at the front desk, a hearing aid that suddenly decided it didn’t want to work, and a patient who was frustrated—and somehow Lydia would still be standing there calmly saying, “Let’s see what we can do.”

That is a special trait that simply cannot be taught.

And the best part? Those patients who sometimes came in frustrated would often leave happy. Many would come back for future visits and specifically request Lydia. She had a way of making people feel heard and cared for, even when they weren’t necessarily at their best.

Lydia fit into our front office like the final piece of a puzzle. She picked everything up quickly, became someone we could completely depend on, and has been the steady presence we didn’t even know we needed.

Over the past eight and a half years, Lydia has become so much more than someone who works at our front desk. She’s become part of our Today’s Hearing family.

She’s fun to work with, dependable, incredibly thoughtful, and somehow remembers details about things the rest of us have long forgotten. She’s always willing to help, always willing to jump in, and always seems to know what needs to happen next.

And honestly, I don’t know how we would have made it through the past eight and a half years without her.

I’m so thankful that an Indeed job posting brought Lydia through our doors in 2018. What started as a search for someone to help me while I was having a baby turned into finding someone who would become such an important part of our team—and someone I’m lucky to call a friend.

Lydia, we are so grateful for you. ❤️

This week on “Let Me Tell You Something Tuesday”, we want to talk about something that seems a little gross, but is a big part of Audiology….Earwax!

“Let Me Tell You About Earwax”

Earwax is also known by the medical community as Cerumen. Cerumen is made up of natural oils and dead skin cells in the ear. The ear is a self-cleaning organ. It “self-cleans” by the movement of the mandible (jaw) over time working the cerumen outwards.

So why do we have Cerumen in the first place?

It catches things like dust, dirt, and any other possible debris that may want to make its way down toward the eardrum. So for the most part, it's good to have a little wax in your ear.

Sometimes there is too much cerumen in the ear, or it becomes solid and stiff. In that case, it can impair hearing ability, and that is when we can come in to help remove these blockages and get you back to normal ear function. It is important to leave these removals up to an Audiologist, because an untrained hand can further impact wax or even puncture the eardrum!

And if you’re into it…we can even project the removal onto the TV for you to watch!

This week on "Let Me Tell You Something Tuesday"....

"Let me tell you how Robyn became part of our work family in 2017."

I've always believed that the best people are often closer than you think. So, when it was time to add someone to our front office team, I started by posting on my page.

My neighbor, Robyn, reached out. She was working just 10–15 hours a week and was looking for something new. I didn't know her all that well, but I knew she had a kind heart, a calm presence, and was someone people naturally felt comfortable talking to.

I invited her to spend a few days at the office to see what she thought. She immediately fell in love with our office culture and the relationships we have with our patients. It didn't take long, though, for both of us to realize that juggling a fast-paced front office with a million moving pieces wasn't where she would thrive—and that's perfectly okay.

Fortunately, there is never a shortage of things to do in an audiology practice.

We quickly transitioned Robyn into insurance verification, a role that had been consuming more and more of my time and was nearly impossible to manage while also keeping the front office running smoothly. It turned out to be the perfect fit.

Robyn has far more patience than I do. She can sit on hold for 30 minutes, finally reach someone, get disconnected, and calmly start the process all over again. It takes a very special person not to lose their mind doing that day after day.

Since 2017, Robyn has faithfully handled our insurance verifications. She rarely complains, even on the days when she has every reason to. Her patience, consistency, and willingness to take on one of the least glamorous—but most essential—jobs in our office have made an incredible difference to our team.

Of course, over the past nine years, I've gotten to know Robyn far beyond the workplace. I've had the privilege of watching her navigate one of life's biggest transitions—becoming an empty nester as she sent each of her three boys off to college. And this June, I got to celebrate with her as she entered an exciting new chapter: becoming "Grandma" for the very first time.

One of the things I admire most about Robyn is that she quietly shows up for the people she loves. Whether it's her family, her coworkers, or our patients, she's dependable, thoughtful, and always willing to help. She's the kind of person who doesn't seek the spotlight, but our office simply wouldn't be the same without her.
