An accent tells a story of bravery.

An individual has learned a new language and had the courage to make mistakes, often in the company of others who only speak that one language and may judge them.

An individual likely learned this language to survive.

An accent tells us the story of someone's home and culture. They may miss this place. They may not. But this place differs from where they are now.

An accent tells us the story of a brain that developed a primary language and continues to prioritize some patterns of this language when using others. This is expected. This is NOT a disorder. This is NOT an error. This is something we must honor, respect, and value. For this accent tells us that this person has the bravery to communicate beyond their primary language of origin with others who may not share their same perspectives, values, or traditions. They have been vulnerable.

Clinicians and educators should not assume an accent is a speech disorder, and instead we should take the time to review the sounds and grammar systems of the individual's primary language to determine if they are transferring them to their second language. No language should be centered above others, all languages are valuable.

📣PSA: According to research, AUTISM AND BILINGUALISM CAN CO-EXIST!

Here are scientific studies explained by speech-language pathologist Claudio Serrano Johnson of Blossoming Bilinguals:

Source 1. Garrido, D., López, B., & Carballo, G. (2024). Bilingualism and language in children with autistic spectrum disorder: a systematic review. Neurología (English Edition), 39(1), 84-96.

The review analyzed 12 studies from four different databases, consisting of a group of 328 kids with ASD:
169 ASD-Bilingual (ASD-B) and
159 ASD-Monolingual (ASD-M), ages 3 to 12.

Overall, the research shows that being bilingual doesn't make language
development harder for children with ASD.

Most of the studies agree that bilingualism doesn't have a negative impact, even though many families and healthcare professionals still believe it might.

The results indicate that there aren't major differences in language skills between bilingual and monolingual kids with ASD.

If a child (whether they're neurotypical or neurodivergent) doesn't get regular exposure to a language, it makes sense that the language won't develop well or might fade over time. We shouldn't automatically assume that if a child with autism doesn't pick up a language or loses it, it's because of their autism. It might just be that they weren't getting enough input in that language.
