We’ve been asked, “why are we doing this?”
[Going unplugged that is…with no phones, no smart watches, and no music beginning in September]…
And there are ✨many✨ reasons.
But mainly, we want to walk back to the origins of yoga where phones, smart watches, and music wasn’t integral or even part of the practice.
Yes, there is kirtan, bhajan, and mantra repetition… these are sacred practices of sound and a form of meditation concentration. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing music in yoga classes! We are just choosing to go back to the roots and ✨simplify.
Yoga doesn’t historically require silence.
But neither does yoga historically require entertainment.
It’s much more nuanced.
Music has always had a place in Indian spiritual traditions, but the purpose of sound matters. And beginning in September, we are choosing to simply listen, without music.
We are going to tune in deeper to our body beyond what our ears can hear, feel deeper, listen to the voice in our head, the sound of our breathing, the sound of the room around, and the world outside. We are unplugging from devices so we can plug into ourselves… and it’s just for one hour 😉
