A Veteran’s spouse often spends years standing beside them, building a life together and supporting their family.

After a Veteran passes away, many surviving spouses do not realize that they may still be eligible for support.

Some surviving spouses of wartime Veterans may qualify for assistance that can help with licensed in-home care.

If someone in your family is a surviving spouse, do not assume there are no options. Reach out and ask.

For many older adults, a little support with the tasks that have become difficult can make it easier to keep doing the things they still enjoy and manage safely.

Before discharge, try to gather your loved one’s service history, current care needs, spouse status, and the contact information for the family member who will help coordinate care.

You do not need every answer right away. Having these basics simply gives the conversation a stronger starting point.
