I want to talk about an important theme that I’m noticing online lately.
More and more we’re being drawn into this battle of egos. And this idea that there is only enough to go around for some, but not all. I noticed this most recently in an online debate about whether or not people should be celebrating pride followed by questions about veterans. As if to say that we need to be supporting our veterans and not our LGBTQ population.
The field of mental health has always been at the forefront of scarcity. We’ve always been paid the least, but been given insane caseloads. There is a downside to that, but also there’s a beauty in it in terms of what we have learned…
The field of mental health has definitely learned that there is more than enough pain and suffering to go around and that it’s not limited to, but in fact inside of all populations.
As the founder and director of this organization, the daughter of a combat veteran, and an ally to the LGBTQ population, I’m here to assure you, there is absolutely no shortage of pain, suffering, grief, and toxic and traumatic stress in our population.
Trauma doesn’t give one iota about your skin color, whether or not you’ve been r***d, gone to war, or told you were stupid… trauma is going to show up unadulterated and ready to run the show.
For our community and beyond to believe that there is somehow some kind of scarcity or limitation to who is impacted by mental health is a total fallacy. Mental health has just as much of an impact on a white male as it does a black woman, as it does a gay person. There might be more dose across populations, but its ability to have an impact, not a thing. We’re all subject to it.
So in knowing that don’t you think it would be better for us to work on supporting one another instead of thinking that one group is better off than the other?
The good news is even if you don’t agree, that’s how we practice things here at The Center KSQ. We don’t discriminate, because mental health doesn’t either.
