Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Infection can occur after consuming contaminated food or water, particularly fresh produce.

The most common symptom is persistent watery diarrhea. Other symptoms may include abdominal cramping, nausea, bloating, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, headache, body aches, vomiting, or a low-grade fever. Symptoms may last for several weeks, improve, and then return.

Help reduce your risk by:
✅ Washing your hands before and after handling produce
✅ Rinsing fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water
✅ Removing bruised or damaged areas
✅ Refrigerating cut, peeled, or cooked produce within two hours
✅ Avoiding food or water that may be contaminated, especially while traveling
The Winkler County Hospital District Laboratory can test stool specimens for Cyclospora. In some cases, specimens collected on different days may be needed.

If you are experiencing persistent watery diarrhea or other concerning symptoms, contact the Winkler County Rural Clinic at 432-586-2040. A healthcare provider can determine whether testing and treatment are appropriate.
