What Is TMJ Intra-Oral Massage… and What Does Your Hip Have to Do With It?
When we talk about TMJ work, we can't always look at the jaw by itself.
Intra-oral massage is specialized massage performed—with gloves—inside the mouth to access muscles involved in jaw movement that are difficult to reach externally. This may include work involving muscles such as the masseter and pterygoids.
It can be helpful as part of care for jaw tension, clenching, limited jaw movement, and muscular discomfort associated with TMJ dysfunction.
But here's where it gets interesting...
Your jaw and your hips don't operate in isolation.
The body functions as an interconnected system. The position and movement of the pelvis can influence the spine, rib cage, shoulders, neck, and ultimately how the head and jaw are positioned. Likewise, guarding or compensation higher in the body can affect movement patterns farther down the chain.
Does that mean a tight hip causes TMJ problems? Not necessarily. But it does mean that when I'm assessing someone with persistent jaw tension, I may look beyond the jaw.
That could mean considering: 🦷 Jaw and facial muscles
💆 Neck and shoulders
🫁 Breathing and rib-cage mechanics
🧍 Posture and spinal movement
🦵 Pelvis and hips
This is why my approach to clinical massage is about asking:
“What is connected to what I'm seeing?”
Sometimes the place you're feeling the symptoms is only one piece of the puzzle.
