Catch the Sunrise Together 🌅

Before the day gets busy, Igmu is already curled up by the window, watching the sky change color.

A simple morning activity: step outside as a family, find a safe place to sit or stand, and watch the sunrise together for a few quiet minutes. Ask children what they notice: colors in the sky, bird sounds, cool morning air, clouds, shadows, or how the light slowly changes.

Morning outdoor time can support healthy routines. Light helps cue the body’s circadian rhythm, the internal clock connected to sleep and wake patterns, and regular physical activity outdoors supports children’s growth, movement, and development.

Try this:

- Bring a blanket, take three slow breaths together, and ask:
- “What color do you see first?”
- “What sounds do you hear?”
- “How does the morning feel?”

Keep it safe: never look directly at the sun, supervise children near roads or water, dress for the weather, and use sun protection when needed. For health questions, especially for children with medical conditions or sun sensitivity, check with a doctor or healthcare provider.

Sometimes the best family moments are the simple ones: cool air, changing colors, and a new day starting together.

Igmu found a veggie-packed sandwich that brings big flavor without needing a grill!

Open-Faced Pan-Seared Vegetable Sandwich 🥪🌿

Ingredients
• 1 large zucchini
• 1 white onion
• 2 cups mushroom caps, you can also use stems; cut lengthwise so they don’t roll off
• 1 cup bell peppers, red, onion, orange, no green for this recipe
• 1 small eggplant, peeled
• 1.5 T grapeseed or olive oil
• 1 T pepper
• 6 slices whole grain bread or buns

Optional
• 1 t oregano
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 3 large roasted green chilies
• Hummus spread

Makes: 6 servings

Instructions

1. Cut vegetables into strips no longer than two inches long and ½ inches wide.
2. Put oil in frying pan and heat on medium high.
3. Add ingredients to pan and cook until tender.
4. Toast bread and add vegetable mixture to top.
5. If you like hummus, spread on the bread and then add vegetables.

This is a great way to explore how vegetables change when they cook; mushrooms soften, onions get sweeter, and zucchini becomes tender.

Igmu took a quiet canoe ride through the water today.

Canoes have a long history across Turtle Island. Many Indigenous Nations used different kinds of canoes, including dugout and birchbark canoes, for travel, fishing, gathering, visiting, and trade. In the Great Lakes region, archaeologists have found dugout canoes that show thousands of years of Indigenous knowledge connected to waterways.

Birchbark canoes were especially important in the Eastern Woodlands because they were strong, lightweight, and well suited for lakes and rivers.

Today, canoeing can still be a peaceful way to notice the land and water around us: the plants at the shoreline, the reflection on the water, and the animals that make wetlands their home.

What do you notice first when you’re near the water?

Igmu found a simple summer favorite: corn on cooked right on the grill. Keeping the husks on helps the corn steam as it cooks, while the grill adds that warm, smoky flavor.

Ingredients
• 6–12 ears of corn, husks on

Optional
• Garlic
• Salt to taste
• Pepper to taste
• Bar-b-que flavor sprinkle

How to Make It

1. Preheat your outdoor grill and, using a grill brush, “paint” the grill with vegetable oil.
2. Peel back the corn husks and remove the silk.
Optional: sprinkle spices on the corn. Close the husks.
3. Put on the grill for about 30 minutes.
4. Turn occasionally.

Try this: Soak the corn in salt water with a few tablespoons of sugar, with husks on, before cooking to help make the corn tender. Sugar can make the corn sweeter.

Some families skip foil and simply turn the corn often so it won’t burn.

Be careful with butter and flavor sprinkles. What do you like with grilled corn?

Igmu explored how plants can be used as natural dyes! Many fruits, vegetables, flowers, and roots have pigments that can leave color behind when they are pressed, rubbed, stamped, or painted onto paper or wood.

Children can notice how different plants make different colors:

Red cabbage → purple or blue tones
Blueberries → blue-purple marks
Spinach → soft green color
Beets and berries → pinks and reds
Calendula → yellow-orange color
Turmeric → bright golden yellow

Try This: Plant Dye Stamping

Choose colorful plants or foods like spinach, blueberries, beets, red cabbage, or turmeric. Place paper or unfinished wood on the table. With adult help, gently rub, press, or stamp the plants onto the surface and watch the colors appear.

Ask: “Which plant made the brightest color?”
“Did the color change after it dried?”

Tip: Wear old clothes or cover the table, natural dyes can stain!

What plant color would you try first?

June Camping Safety with Igmu 🏕️

June can be a wonderful time for families to explore the outdoors. Igmu found that planning ahead helps young campers have a safer and more enjoyable adventure.

Before heading to the campsite:

☀️ Check the weather and pack drinking water, sunscreen, hats, sturdy shoes, flashlights, and clothing for changing temperatures.

🔥 Keep children away from campfires, grills, matches, lighters, and hot cooking equipment. A responsible adult should actively supervise the fire, follow local fire restrictions, and completely extinguish it before leaving or sleeping.

💧 Give children constant, attentive adult supervision around lakes, rivers, creeks, pools, and other water. Stay within arm’s reach of young children and inexperienced swimmers. Use properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for boating and other activities where they are recommended or required. A life jacket does not replace supervision.

🪲 Use an EPA registered insect repellent according to its label. Avoid tall grass and leaf litter when possible, walk near the center of trails, and check children, adults, clothing, and gear for ticks after outdoor activities. Do not use repellents containing OLE or PMD on children younger than 3.

🥪 Follow the campground’s instructions for storing food, trash, cooking supplies, and scented items. Safe storage practices can vary depending on local wildlife and campground regulations.

🧭 Teach children to stay with their trusted adult or group. The National Park Service also recommends a buddy system and making a plan for what children should do if they become separated.

Children can help with safe, age-appropriate jobs such as filling water bottles, organizing nonhazardous supplies, or choosing a bedtime story for the tent.
