To my dear patients-
While I take a bit of time to grieve and process the unexpected loss of my mother, please know that I will be back in practice in a new location. You all know my gentle spirit, but that compassion I carry was forged in the fires of tremendous adversity. I have a strength and determination to rise up. I am no longer practicing at SEAK Health. I am here, present and will be continuing your care. Know that I love you all. Together as a community we have healed from great heartbreak, and together we hold sacred all life, and celebrate the beauty each of us possesses. Be well until I see you again.♥️

Good morning,
I am announcing changes to my practice as I continue my pursuit of specialization in pulmonary/critical care medicine. This focus requires off island training, and attendance at conferences. This requirement means that my practice will no longer manage chronic pain with narcotics, as the drug monitoring is not something I can give enough attention to. I know this will invoke anxiety however, those of you out there suffering with chronic pain have trusted me to guide you through some of the most difficult times in your lives. I am not abandoning you. I will offer safe alternatives and help you achieve better quality of life. Working with a pain management team, and using holistic healing you can lead a happy life. Some of you will not choose this path, and I respect that. I can transfer records to a clinic of your choosing. Know that I will not abruptly stop your meds. I wish to work with each person to wean off carefully and compassionately. You can live a life free of pain medication and be liberated, healthy and happy. Be well.

I wake each morning with a great sense of gratitude. This morning I am feeling particularly grateful for my parents. Let me share with you the importance of having CPR training. Anyone can certify, and you can save a life.
I was cleaning the kitchen this morning as my mom was eating breakfast. I heard her cough a bit and then silence. It was a weak cough which always alerts me. I turned around to face her and she was pointing to her throat. I asked, “are you choking?” She nodded yes as she grew frantic. I ran around the counter and began performing the Heimlich maneuver until I cleared her airway. She began gasping and coughing. Someone who has experienced a choking event should be evaluated in the ER in case of secondary airway edema, or aspiration.
Also, some people will retreat to a bathroom or step away from others when they are coughing or choking to avoid disturbing people. Follow that person if you are able. That person could lose their airway while alone.
There are local resources available to get certified in basic life support. You never know when you might need it. My mom is feeling thankful this morning, too. What a blessed day.

Greetings everyone! I have returned to Ketchikan from Boston, and have exciting news to share. I will be joining the team at SEAK Orthopedics which is located in the west flight building. They will be handling my schedule. You can call them at 247-9999. I will continue to practice primary care, however I am also continuing my education, and will be specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine. My experiences in Boston at Brigham and Women’s hospital inspired me to pursue my love for this specialty. I would like to get everyone in for evaluation, and discuss in person how my practice is changing, and what I have gained from my time at one of the most phenomenal hospitals in the United States. Joining the team at SEAK is in alignment with my goals to provide compassionate care in a collaborative environment. I am honored and thrilled as we work together to change healthcare in this community!

Good morning everyone. It is a rare occasion that I will share things on social media. I struggle with some of the more harmful effects it has on people. So, I’m going to be vulnerable, raw and true. There is not enough of that out there.
As I continue the clinical trial in Boston I’ve had many days sitting in isolation to contemplate this journey. I’ve undergone 2 sets of invasive tests within 2 months. The second round broke me. The pain was unbearable. It is in moments of great suffering that we also have the unique opportunity to cultivate compassion, deep empathy and greater love. I wouldn’t change anything about this…even the loneliness I feel being here away from all of you. I’m grateful. I feel connected to my town although I am thousands of miles away. We are like a great big family. The disease I battle is also hurting some of you, and if I can walk this path and give you hope, inspiration and courage then it’s worth it!
I started the trial drug 10 days ago. ASP0367. I woke this morning and could walk without pain. Again, sobbing with gratitude that it’s the actual medication, and not a placebo. I haven’t experienced this freedom in years. It’s working. Although I will not remain on it- I do know that it will eventually become available.
I undergo the 3rd round of invasive testing August 10th and 11th. I will walk into it with courage in my heart and tears in my eyes. What is courage but facing fears head on. I carry the spirit of Alaska within my heart. The wildness, the crazy, chaotic spontaneous energy of nature. That is me. I will come home even stronger and ready to care for all of you. Don’t you ever give up. No matter how challenging life is. Life is miraculous! Breathe it in.
My address here: 461 Washington st. Apt 1, Brookline, MA 02446. If you write, I will write back. ♥️

Good Afternoon everyone!
I hope all of you are enjoying the beautiful weather there. I wanted to let everyone know that Shannon Davis has stepped away from practice in Ketchikan, and will no longer be covering for my clinic. She has begun a new adventure in Alaska and needs to focus on her clinical practice. I am grateful for her help and wish her well on this next chapter!
I have reached out to Dr. DeGroote at SEAK orthopedics who has graciously offered to help cover my practice while I continue care at Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston. His Physician Assistant is also trained in primary care, and is willing to see my patients in the Ortho clinic who need care. I am working to refill medications and review labs, radiology results. We are working through the details and will have updates for everyone soon! My priority is ensuring everyone is taken care of. It continues to be an honor to practice in Ketchikan and I hope to return by the end of August.

Dearest patients of mine. You have followed me on this journey since I became a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have been there with you through dark, challenging times, and celebrated with you the triumphs along the way. You know that I love each one of you. All life is sacred to me. I see a God in each of you. The capacity to love, teach, nurture, and heal. Love yourselves as I have loved you.
Now, my journey has taken another path. I am facing a health crisis myself, and as I sit in a hotel room in Boston, I reflect on all that life has blessed me with. I am receiving extraordinary care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Those of you who know me well will understand my inner strength and fearlessness. Do not feel sorry for me. No! Celebrate all that I have taught you! Celebrate that you have been cared for and loved unconditionally.
The team here has much work to do, and this may require me staying for months to get the care I need.
So, Shannon Davis, PMHFNP has graciously stepped in to help care for you all. I trust her. You all know I have exceptionally high standards, and would not leave you with a provider who is anything less than exceptional! Each of you are sacred to me. Please open your hearts and minds to her. Let her care for you, as I will not be available very much anymore. Again, no feeling sorry! I hate that! LOL! I’m eternally grateful for Dr. Systrom. He is a brilliant physician who is determined to help. I am so grateful. My heart is filled with love, compassion, empathy and gratitude. What a wonderful life I’ve lived!
Please reach out to Shannon. Her contact information is (907)220-6264. You can call or text that number. I know some of you much prefer texting!❤️❤️. Be well. Live life to the fullest. Be brave and bold! Laugh and play. Take care of one another...
