Ketchikan Indian Community and Tribal Health Clinic - KIC

Ketchikan Indian Community and Tribal Health Clinic - KIC Purpose of the Page:

This page will be used for communication between the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) organization and its Tribal Members.

Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) is a sovereign nation and federally-recognized Indian Tribe serving 6,600+ Tribal citizens in our Tribal Health Clinic, as well as our Social Services, Education & Training, Housing, and Cultural Resources departments. We will share public information in regards to announcements and news, as well as sharing pictures and videos of our employees actively serving our community. We hope to increase communication between the organization and the Tribal community in a professional and respectful manner. This is a discussion forum for the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) and its members. It is not a channel for bullying or ranting. We encourage those with concerns to contact us directly so that we might work together towards solutions. While it is our intention to never ban individuals from our page, if content becomes abusive or inflammatory, we will remove that content and block the offending users so as to allow constructive and beneficial conversations. While this is an open forum, it's also a family friendly one, so please keep your comments and wall posts clean. In addition to keeping it family friendly, we ask that you follow our posting guidelines. If you don't comply, your message will be removed. We hope you'll never have cause to complain about KIC services or activities, but we're open to any and all feedback and will do our best to correct the situation. Since KIC operates a medical clinic we are required to follow Federal regulation in regards to patient privacy (HIPAA). Other areas of our organization have similar requirements in regards to handling of private information. Therefore we will ask you to send us appropriate details in a private channel such as email or phone call. Please be aware that we cannot discuss personal and private matters in a public channel such as our Facebook wall, so repeated complaints and criticisms of KIC, employees, members or services will not be tolerated. Posting and Moderation Guidelines:

• Please make sure you comply with Facebook’s Terms of Use (http://www.facebook.com/terms.php).
• Please do not post personal photographs or video content without the written consent of all persons and KIC. If a photo or video is posted to the KIC page you agree to granting KIC permission to use the photo or video for any non-profit informational or promotional material or publication.
• Please note that if you are a KIC employee, Tribal Council member or a member of a KIC Committee, or you are affiliated with KIC in any way, we welcome your posts, but you are not authorized to speak on behalf of the organization. You should keep in mind the KIC Social Media Policy (4/10/2013).
• For your security, please refrain from posting your personal information on Facebook. Remember, this is a public place. Posts containing personally identifiable information of any member or KIC employee may be removed. This includes, but is not limited to: names, address, telephone numbers, email addresses and medical information.
• Posts that are blatantly off topic may be removed.
• Be kind to other members of this community, and avoid using obscene, defamatory, hateful, discriminatory or offensive language, comments or images. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.
• We do not allow graphic, obscene, explicit or racial comments or submissions nor do we allow comments that are abusive, hateful or intended to defame anyone or any organization.
• Please understand this is a community for people to share news and information about KIC. If you post information that advertises other products or that is not relevant to KIC, your post may be removed.
• We do not allow "bumping" content--that is to say, posts that serve to repeat existing issues and bring them to the top of the wall.
• You participate at your own risk, taking personal responsibility for your comments, your username and any information provided.
• KIC's community managers may not be permitted to discuss or communicate on certain topics. If this happens they will direct you to the appropriate person or contact. Questions or issues may be submitted to [email protected].

Flu cases have increased since the start of September. Antiviral drugs should be started as soon as possible after symptoms begin. Studies show that treatment of flu with antiviral medications works best when started within two days after flu symptoms begin and can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick by about a day. Starting antiviral treatment shortly after symptoms begin also can help reduce some flu complications.

NEW TRIBAL RESPONSE PROGRAM FOR CONTAMINATED SITES COMING SOON!

Under its current leadership, Ketchikan Indian Community's Cultural Resources Department (CRD) is developing a stewardship framework centered on KIC’s responsibility to protect our lands, waters, traditional resources, cultural landscapes, and subsistence resources.

Brownfields, contaminated sites, petroleum releases, and marine spills can directly affect traditional foods, harvesting areas, waterways, and culturally important places.

Addressing these threats fits within the Tribe’s broader stewardship responsibilities.

The CRD has identified active contaminated sites around Ketchikan Gateway Borough and created a Public Record of these sites to be investigated.

The department intends to train and cross-train its staff in appropriate Tribal Response Program activities, including 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, contaminated-site identification, field documentation, spill awareness and response, site safety, environmental monitoring, and reporting procedures.

Additionally, a public comment option will become available soon to foster community participation in protecting our shared lands and waters

With so much happening in our community right now, please take time to care for yourself and one another.

Step away from the noise when you need to. Spend time on the land or water, connect with the people who help you feel grounded, and make room to rest.

However you are feeling, you do not have to carry it alone. You matter. You belong. You are loved.

Hosted by the Alaska Federation of Natives

The Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) invites Tribal and Native Corporation leaders, Elders, subsistence harvesters, youth, natural resource staff, community leaders, and interested community members to participate in an upcoming Subsistence Listening Session in Ketchikan.

As Alaskans consider the future of subsistence management, including potential policy changes, co-management opportunities, and constitutional amendment considerations, AFN is committed to hearing directly from Alaska Native communities to inform the development of positions and recommendations.

These listening sessions are designed to provide a respectful forum for communities to share their experiences, concerns, priorities, and visions for the future of subsistence. We want to better understand the challenges facing subsistence users today, identify regional priorities, discuss Native and local involvement in management decisions, and hear what principles and values Alaska Native people believe should guide subsistence policy changes.

The purpose of these sessions is to listen, learn, and ensure that community voices help shape future discussions—not to promote or oppose any specific proposal or management framework.

We encourage participation from:
• Tribal leaders and Tribal citizens
• Elders and traditional knowledge holders
• Active hunters, fishers, gatherers, and trappers
• Youth and future subsistence users
• Tribal natural resource and environmental staff
• Community and village leaders
• Regional organizations and Native corporations
