Pop Quiz: How long does it take for the temperature inside a car to heat up by 20 degrees?
🔴 60 minutes
🔴 10 minutes
🔴 30 minutes
If you said 10 minutes, you would be correct. The temperature inside a car can increase by 20 degrees in 10 minutes or less, depending on how hot it is outside. On an 80-degree day, the temperature inside a car can soar to 120 degrees in just 20 minutes. Also, children's bodies heat up 3 to 5 times faster than adults, making them especially susceptible to heatstroke and death.
⚠️ Never, ever leave a child alone in a car: Even for a few minutes, even with the windows cracked or if they are asleep.
⚠️ Lock cars: Ensure cars are locked when parked to prevent children from climbing in unattended.
⚠️ Create reminders: Place your phone, wallet, or purse in the backseat as a visual reminder to check before leaving the car.
⚠️ Take Action: If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately.
