Modeling is one of those parenting strategies we use every day, often without even realizing it.
Children are constantly watching how we handle frustration, talk to others, respond to mistakes, manage disappointment, set boundaries, and try again when something doesn’t go our way.
And for children with ADHD, seeing a skill in action can be especially helpful.
We can remind a child to “calm down,” “think before you react,” or “try again”, but sometimes they need to actually see what that looks like.
Model the pause.
Model the calm voice.
Model flexible thinking.
Model making a mistake and trying again.
Model apologizing and repairing.
This doesn’t mean parents need to respond perfectly all the time. In fact, letting your child see you recognize a mistake and handle it differently the next time can be a powerful lesson in itself.

Does your child become quiet, irritable, emotional, or uncooperative immediately after school?
It doesn’t necessarily mean something went wrong. Children spend many hours listening, learning, managing emotions, navigating friendships, following directions, and meeting expectations. By pickup time, their mental and emotional energy may be depleted.
Even well-intentioned questions can feel like additional demands when a child’s nervous system is asking for a break.
Instead of beginning with questions, try beginning with connection:
“Hi! I’m so happy to see you.”
Then offer a snack, a little quiet, or a few minutes of movement. Once your child feels more regulated, conversation may happen more naturally.
The goal isn’t to stop showing interest in their day. It’s to consider when and how we ask.
Does your child usually want to talk immediately—or do they need time to decompress first?

Have you ever wondered why your child holds it together all day at school—then falls apart the moment they get home?
There may be more happening beneath the behavior than it appears. This pattern is often referred to as after-school restraint collapse.
I’ve seen it many times in my practice, and it inspired me to explore the phenomenon more deeply.
More education and practical strategies for families are coming soon. 🤍

✨ Something exciting is coming to Key Biscayne Counseling.

We’re excited to begin offering Children’s Social-Emotional Skills Groups designed to help children strengthen emotional awareness, coping skills, flexible thinking, problem-solving, and healthy peer interactions through play, creativity, and connection.

These small-group, non-clinical enrichment programs will be offered for children ages 7–8 and 9–10, with each group intentionally kept small to encourage participation and meaningful connections.

We are currently finalizing the program details, including the schedule and location.

If you think this program may be a good fit for your child, I invite you to complete the Interest Form linked in the QR code (or in my bio). Families who complete the form will receive updates as soon as enrollment opens.

We look forward to sharing more details soon!

One of the questions parents ask me the most is whether I have any book recommendations for parenting and challenging behaviors.
Here are some of my best finds! Each book offers a slightly different approach, so the best choice will depend on your child and the specific behaviors you are trying to understand or improve.📚
