One of the first assignments I give my Certified Fibromyalgia Advisor® students is to write down 10 things that bring them joy.

Do you know what happens?

…. Nothing.

Just a long, awkward pause where they're staring at the page thinking, “I don’t know. What brings me joy?” 🫣

Ten is HARD — and most people feel ashamed when they can't do it, like they've lost touch with themselves.

But that blank page isn’t a judgment.

It’s information.

And yes, I mean a blank page tells us as much as a full one would!

It tells me you’ve been giving things up one at a time — the thing that cost too much energy, the thing that always caused a flare, the thing you cancelled on so many times they stopped inviting you.

You didn’t decide to shrink your life.

It happened in fifty small moments, until one day someone asks you what you enjoy and you honestly don’t know. 💜

This week, Jeannette wrote about joy not being something you earn after you've been productive enough.

I’ll add one thing to that:

For a lot of us, joy isn't just postponed. It's been erased, one cancelled plan at a time.

And you can't choose from a list you no longer have.

Rebuilding your Joy List is real work. It means figuring out what your body can really do, what's worth the energy, and what you might be ready to put back into your life.

That's exactly the kind of thing a Certified Fibromyalgia Coach® can help you do.

Not more advice about what you SHOULD be doing.

Someone who has lived this, who can look at your life with you and help you decide what goes back in — and in what order.

She can even share what works in her own life, which might be the difference between doing what you enjoy again or not.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

📸 In New York City for the premiere of INVISIBLE, the fibromyalgia feature documentary, with my dear friends Melissa and Julie. Talk about something that belongs on my joy list. 💜

"When you're holding on energetically so tightly to something, it's exhausting. It means that something is gripping in the background in your nervous system and it takes up energy. Since often with fibromyalgia, you see chronic fatigue, it is worth exploring these things… When people let go of whatever they're holding on internally, they're freeing up energy."

— Dr. Andrea Moore, Unweaving Chronic Pain

This is something Dr. Andrea said when she interviewed me for her podcast, and I've thought about it a lot since.

Whether you're holding tightly to your fibro routine, your medication, or your ability to do things you used to do — that grip takes energy. It takes up space.

Holding those things loosely frees up mental and physical energy you can spend elsewhere. 💜

And after a week of talking about joy, that feels like the other half of the same conversation. Making room for joy usually means letting go of something first.

Getting your life back doesn’t mean checking everything off a list.

✔ Didn’t overdo it. Check.
✔ Went to bed on time. Check.
✔ Didn’t eat the cake. Check.
✔ Took a handful of pills. Check.

All of that is maintenance.
None of it is joy. 🙄

Fibromyalgia is so good at shrinking our lives that adding joy back in has to be on purpose.

Period.

Not once everything else is done.

Not with whatever time and energy is left over.

Joy doesn’t have to take a lot of time or be expensive.

🏅Cuddles with Finn are right at the top of my list.

I mean look at all that FLUFF!! 🥰

Your life deserves more than leftovers. ❤️

What’s one small way you can add joy back into your day?⁣⁣⁣⁣

08/20/2026

Joy isn’t just emotional — it’s biological.

Oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” is released when we hug someone we love, cuddle a pet, hold hands, or even share a heartfelt conversation.

Here’s the part most people don’t know:
Oxytocin reduces pain by calming your stress response and quieting pain signals in your brain and spinal cord.

Joy, love, and connection aren’t luxuries.
They’re part of your healing system. 💜

“What if joy is not something we get after we have done enough?
What if joy is part of what helps us keep going?”
— Jeannette Rechsteiner, Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

There’s something sneaky about the idea that joy has to be earned.

Most of us would never actually say that out loud.

We’d never tell our best friend,

“You haven't been productive enough today, so you’re not allowed to enjoy yourself.”

So why do we tell ourselves that?

Why do we live like it?

We finish the work first.
Take care of everyone else first.
Handle the responsible things first.

And joy? That’s relegated to whatever time or energy is left.

With fibromyalgia, sometimes (often) there is nothing left.

That’s what I love about the question Jeannette asks in this week’s article:

What if joy doesn’t belong at the end of the list at all?

What if it’s essential? 💜

New on The Fibro Compass℠:
Joy Is Not A Productivity Bonus
by Jeannette Rechsteiner
Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

Have you ever promised yourself you'd enjoy the afternoon — right after the emails are answered?

Then the laundry.
Then one more thing.
Then it's dark out.

…and you’re crashed out on the couch with nothing left.

The list of things to do never ends. 🫣

In this week’s article, Jeannette makes a case I think a lot of us need to hear:

Joy isn't the prize you collect once you've been productive enough to deserve it.

In fact, for a fibromyalgia nervous system, JOY may be the thing that allows you to meet the day at all. 💜

The best thing about Jeannette’s article is the humanness she shows as she writes.

She even admits how badly she follows her own advice — writing most of this article indoors, on a beautiful day, refusing to stop until she finishes ‘just this one thing.’ The one thing being an article about not postponing joy. 😂

If you've been treating pleasure as something you have to earn first, this article is your permission slip.

It’s also a healthy dose of “you’re not alone.”

Today's comes from Roo in Alabama. 💜

She wrote:

"Thank you, Tami. I appreciate your work to help fibromyalgia people. We need you, and I pray you are doing well. I cannot say enough of how much you have helped me live, cope, accept, and know I am a 'normal' fibro person."

That phrase...
"...know I am a 'normal' fibro person."

I think so many of us can relate to that feeling.

We spend years wondering if we are the only one.

The only one whose body doesn't cooperate.
The only one who feels like no one understands.
The only one with all these symptoms.

The truth is, you are absolutely not alone.
You're not weird.
Your symptoms aren't unusual.

No one should have to go through fibromyalgia feeling that alone.

That's exactly why I created the Fibromyalgia Podcast®.

Every episode is designed to remind you that you're not alone, help you better understand your fibromyalgia, discover practical strategies that can improve your symptoms, and inspire you with stories of hope.

If you've never listened before, I'd love for you to join us.

You don't have to figure this out by yourself. 💜

Have you ever felt like you're doing everything "right"...
but you're still not getting better?

You've cleaned up your diet.
You've tried supplements.
You've worked on your sleep.
You've started exercising.
You've reduced stress.
You've listened to podcasts.
You've read books.

And somehow...
you still feel stuck. 🤦🏼‍♀️

One of the biggest patterns I've seen over the last 20 years is that people with fibromyalgia are often trying the right strategies — but at the wrong time or in the wrong order.

When that happens, it's easy to feel like nothing works.

That's exactly why I created the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs Guide.

It helps you understand where you are in your fibromyalgia journey, what to focus on next, and why some strategies work much better after you've built a strong foundation.

Because making progress isn't just about finding the right strategy.

It's about focusing on the right priorities in the right order — so that they work the way they're intended to.

Before you spend more time, money, or energy trying another supplement, diet, treatment, or strategy... make sure you've built the foundation that allows those things to work the way they're intended to.

For many of us with fibromyalgia, the hardest part isn't just the pain or the fatigue—

it's trying to explain what's happening and not feeling understood.

That's exactly what Dr. Elizabeth Audin and I talked about in this webinar for Swing Care, a virtual clinic specializing in fibromyalgia.

In this conversation, we talk about how to communicate with the people around you about your fibromyalgia—especially when those conversations feel the hardest.

Dr. Audin and I explore why it can be so difficult to feel understood, along with practical ways to navigate those conversations more effectively so you can feel more understood and less alone.

If you've ever walked away from a conversation thinking...

"That's not what I meant..."

"They still don't get it..."
..I think you'll find this conversation helpful.

One of the things I love most about being a coach is that I get to walk alongside my clients as they navigate everyday life.

We look at what they've done over the last week and ask, "Could this have been done any differently?"

Sometimes the answer is no.

Maybe there really wasn't another option — and part of my job is helping my clients accept that with compassion and grace.

Sometimes the answer is yes.

When things could have been done differently, I help my clients create a plan for how to change things the next time around.

Over time, those small conversations add up.

They don't just change what you do.

They change how you think about yourself, your body, and what's possible with fibromyalgia.
