Join the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, Waupaca Historical Society, and the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King on Thursday, May 28th as we celebrate a new partnership bringing back the Waupaca community to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King campus.

Since 1888, the Commandants House has stood sentinel to the Chain O’Lakes and the Veterans Home. This year, the Waupaca Historical Society is taking over the running of this registered historical site and opening it to the public.

The official signing will be at 4 p.m. in from of the Commandant’s House. Light refreshments and cake will be served in the Marden Center multi-purpose room immediately following the ceremony.

🏅 Honoring the Legacy of Lt. Ellen Ainsworth ⭐

At a recent meeting of the Wisconsin Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Wisconsin Veterans Home at King Commandant Joni Steingraber accepted the DAR’s Women in American History Award in honor of Second Lieutenant Ellen Ainsworth.

Ainsworth Hall at the King Home was named in honor of Lt. Ainsworth, a Wisconsin native and Army nurse who distinguished herself through dedicated service to soldiers during World War II.

In February 1944, while caring for patients in a hospital tent, Lt. Ainsworth, age 24, was killed by enemy fire. The only Wisconsin servicewoman killed in action during World War II, Lt. Ainsworth was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and Red Cross Bronze Medal.

👏 A big thank you to the volunteers from Hydrite Chemical Company for recently spending a day of service with members at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King! 💙

Hydrite Chemical employees volunteered during a busy day of activities in both Moses Hall and Ainsworth Hall, assisting with music programs and bingo.

Thanks to their extra help during the morning music event in Moses Hall, attendance grew from the expected 20–25 members to more than 50, with everyone enjoying the fun and entertainment together!

We greatly appreciate the Hydrite Chemical volunteers and all of our community partners who generously support our members. :)

🌸Thank you to the members of St. Luke’s Church helping brighten the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King campus once again! 🌸

During a recent visit, a team from St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Wisconsin Rapids (St. Luke's Lutheran Church ) planted hydrangeas and boxwoods in the flower beds between the chapel and cottage areas on the King Home campus while continuing their long-standing mission project of maintaining the King Home’s landscaping. 🌿

The St. Luke’s team has been making periodic visits for more than 13 years as a part of the King Home’s Petals of Honor Program, helping keep the campus beautiful for members, families, and visitors alike. 🌼

The King Home is presently looking for individuals or groups who want to sponsor and maintain an available flower bed on campus throughout the growing season. If interested in the Petals of Honor program, contact [email protected].

📸 Photos feature volunteers planting and decorating the landscape, along with a group photo with King Home Volunteer Coordinator Mary Dulske.

🌸✨ King Celebrates Skilled Nursing Care Week 2026 ✨🌸
This week, the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is celebrating Skilled Nursing Care Week and this year’s theme: “Moments in Bloom.” 🌼

Throughout the week, the King Home has recognized those special moments through activities that celebrate the people who help our community bloom each day. 💐

📸 To help mark the week, on windows of every floor of Ainsworth and Moses Hall you’ll find “blooms” 💐 - each with a name of the one of the professionals working at King - to acknowledge their compassion, caring and teamwork in serving members at the King Home.

Thank you to all who help create a caring and supportive home for our members each day.
