We are grateful to join Kingman Middle School Safety Week and connect with nearly 250 students.

At our โ€œMake Your Own Coping Kitโ€ station, students practiced simple coping skills through return demonstration and role play:

๐Ÿซง Breathe โ€” slow breathing like gently blowing a bubble
โญ Ground โ€” squeeze, hold, and release a squishy star
๐Ÿ’› Emotion โ€” positive reminders that even small improvements are worth celebrating

Students also added to our โ€œWhat Are You Grateful For?โ€ Wall, creating a meaningful space for reflection and positivity.

It was humbling to see so many students participate and practice these skills with us. Weโ€™re grateful for the opportunity to support youth mental wellness in our community

Hi, I'm Argie. ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ’š

If you're new here, I want you to know something about the kind of space I hope Cara can be for you.

When your child is struggling, it's easy to start questioning everything.

โ€œAm I overreacting?โ€
โ€œIs this just a phase?โ€
โ€œWhy is my child having such a hard time?โ€
โ€œDid I do something wrong?โ€

I've talked with many parents who come to me carrying those questions and sometimes a lot of guilt along with them.

But you don't have to have all the answers before asking for help.

My role isn't to judge your parenting or expect you to already know what's wrong.

It's to listen, understand your child's story, and help you make sense of what you're seeing.

That's also why I believe in looking beyond a diagnosis or a list of symptoms.

Every child has a different story. Two children can experience similar challenges and still need very different kinds of support.

Through Functional & Integrative Psychiatry, I look at the bigger picture and ask not only what your child is experiencing, but what may be contributing to it.

Most importantly, I want parents to feel comfortable asking questions.

Even the questions you're unsure how to ask.

If you've ever wondered whether something your child is experiencing is โ€œnormal,โ€ you're welcome here. This page is here to give you practical, compassionate information so you can feel a little more informed and a little less alone.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't finding help.

It's deciding whether you should ask for it.

If you've been carrying questions about your child's emotions, behavior, focus, or mental health, here are 10 reminders we hope every parent hears.

1. You don't have to know exactly what's wrong before reaching out.

2. Asking questions doesn't mean you're overreacting.

3. Every child deserves to be understood as an individual.

4. Your concerns as a parent matter.

5. It's okay if you don't have all the answers.

6. An evaluation is about understanding not judging.

7. Early conversations can provide clarity, reassurance, and direction.

8. Seeking support is one of the most caring things you can do for your child.

9. You deserve a provider who listens before making recommendations.

10. You don't have to carry these worries by yourself.

At Cara Behavioral Health, our goal is simple:

To help families better understand their child through compassionate, personalized, evidence-based care.

If you've been wondering whether it's time to ask questions, consider this your reminder that you don't have to wait until everything feels overwhelming.

๐Ÿ’š If you've been noticing changes in your child's mood, behavior, or emotional well-being and you're unsure what they mean, we're here to help you understand the next step. You don't need to have all the answers before starting the conversation.

Save this post for the days you need reassurance, and share it with another parent who may need to hear this today.

Seeking mental health support doesn't make a child lesser.

It doesn't take away from their strengths, abilities, or individuality. It simply means they're receiving support for something they're experiencing just as we seek support for other parts of our health when we need it.

For parents, reaching out can also be an important way of showing a child that their well-being matters.

There doesn't have to be shame in asking questions or learning more. Every child has a unique story, and understanding that story can help families make informed decisions about the support they may need.

๐Ÿ’š What would you want another parent to know if they're feeling hesitant about seeking mental health support for their child?

Not every child will say, โ€œI'm anxious.โ€

Sometimes, anxiety may show up in ways that are easier to notice physically or behaviorally such as frequent stomachaches or headaches, feeling unwell, avoiding school, or not wanting to leave the house.

These signs don't automatically mean a child is experiencing anxiety. But when changes like these continue or begin affecting daily life, they may be worth paying attention to and discussing with a qualified professional.

Understanding how children may express emotional distress can help parents respond with curiosity rather than assumptions.

๐Ÿ’š Has your child ever experienced a change in behavior that was difficult to understand at first? What helped you recognize that something might be going on?

Good grades can tell us something about how a child is doing academically but they don't tell us the whole story.

A child may be performing well in school while still experiencing challenges with attention, focus, mood, behavior, or relationships.

That's why looking at more than grades can be helpful when concerns about a child's well-being come up. What we notice at home and what teachers observe at school can provide important pieces of the bigger picture.

Every child is different, and academic success doesn't necessarily mean there are no other areas that may need support.

๐Ÿ’š Have you ever wondered why a child doing well in school might still be recommended for an evaluation? Share your questions below.

When a child is struggling, most parents naturally want answers as quickly as possible.

But before asking,

"What's the best treatment?"

there's another question that's just as important...

"Why might this be happening?"

Here are 10 reasons why that question matters.

1. Symptoms can have more than one contributing factor.
2. Two children with the same diagnosis may need completely different care.
3. Sleep, nutrition, stress, medical history, and environment can all influence mental health.
4. Looking at the whole child helps us understand the bigger picture.
5. Personalized care starts with listening not assumptions.
6. Understanding comes before making treatment decisions.
7. The goal isn't simply to reduce symptoms.
8. It's to understand what your child truly needs.
9. Every child deserves an approach built around their unique story.
10. Sometimes the most important step isn't finding answers faster it's asking better questions.

At Cara Behavioral Health, Functional Psychiatry means taking time to understand the whole child before creating a personalized care plan.

Because every child deserves to be understood not just diagnosed.

๐Ÿ’š Save this post if it helped you see your child's mental health from a different perspective, and share it with another parent who may need this reminder.

A first psychiatric evaluation can feel unfamiliar, especially when you're not sure what to expect.

At Cara Behavioral Health and Cara Functional Psychiatry & Wellness, the process begins with getting to know your child and creating a comfortable space for conversation. For teenagers, that may include giving them an opportunity to speak privately first.

We also take time to hear from parents and understand what's been happening at home, at school, and in everyday life. From there, the provider and family can work together on a treatment plan based on the child's individual needs.

Every evaluation is different because every child and family is different.

๐Ÿ’š What questions did you have before your child's first psychiatric appointment? Share them in the comments your question may help another parent feel more prepared.

๐Ÿง  Functional Psychiatry Series | Part 2

When parents hear about genetic testing in mental health care, one of the first questions they ask is:

"How can genetics help guide treatment?"

The answer isn't always simple. Many factors can influence how the body responds to medication, and genetics may be one of them.

In Functional Psychiatry, pharmacogenetic testing is one tool that may provide additional information about how a person's body processes certain medications. These insights can help support more informed, individualized treatment decisions when appropriate.

It's important to remember that this type of testing is just one part of a comprehensive evaluation. Medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, and other health factors also play an important role in creating a personalized care plan.

At Cara Functional Psychiatry & Wellness, our goal is to understand the whole person not just the symptoms so care can be tailored to each individual's unique needs.

๐Ÿ’š Before today, had you ever heard of pharmacogenetic testing? What questions do you have about it? We'd love to answer them in a future post.
