Today marks the first day of senior year for Kingston High School student and former ADHV summer intern Liam Paunovic!
He came to ADHV with an existing passion for building and design, but one of the biggest things he says he developed here was teamwork. After being used to doing projects mostly on his own, Liam learned to rely on the people around him and became part of a team working toward a shared goal of community impact.
Liam loves brainstorming and imagining how something can be constructed. One of his favorite parts of working at ADHV was using something people might consider “waste” to build devices that can meaningfully improve someone’s daily life.
Outside of ADHV, Liam is busy building with Legos, learning Arduino, working on his exoskeleton, and exploring his interest in prosthetics engineering—so we have a feeling this is just the beginning!
Liam, we’re going to miss having you around the shop! We’re so grateful for all the work, creativity, and curiosity you brought to ADHV this summer, and we’re excited to see where your interests take you next.
Good luck with senior year and everything beyond! We’ll be cheering you on.

Not all feet—and not all chairs—are the same. That’s why our foot rests are made to fit the student, not the other way around.

Each one is custom-made by request and can be built in different sizes and colors, either freestanding or with anchor points that attach to the student’s chair to help keep it securely in place.

We measure for the student’s specific needs so their feet can rest flat on a supportive surface.

Why does that matter?

For many students, having their feet supported provides a more stable base for sitting and working. A commonly recommended starting point for classroom seating is a “90-90-90” position: hips, knees, and ankles at approximately 90-degree angles, with the feet supported on the floor or a footrest. This can help provide a stable foundation for functional activities like writing and other tabletop tasks.

Back to school means new opportunities to learn, build, and collaborate!

At Adaptive Design Hudson Valley, we don’t believe learning has to happen inside a traditional classroom—or look the same for every group.

We work with schools, businesses, organizations, and community groups to develop custom hands-on programming around accessibility, fabrication, STEAM, OT, and more.

Our programs can look very different depending on who we’re working with. Students might design and build an adaptive device for a real recipient over the course of a semester, or teams might spend a day learning cardboard carpentry and problem-solving.

Gearing up for the new school year we’re excited to be part of an important conversation about the future of education in the Hudson Valley.

Adaptive Design Hudson Valley was invited to participate in the Deeper Learning Lab School Steering Committee, joining BOCES staff, educators, and community and industry partners to help imagine and co-design new opportunities for students.

Over two days of collaborative work, we explored what students need to thrive and how hands-on learning, career-connected experiences, community partnerships, and real-world problem solving can become central to their education.

We’re especially excited to bring ADHV’s perspective on design, fabrication, accessibility, STEAM learning, and learning-by-doing to this process—and to learn from the many other people and organizations helping shape this vision.

A big thank you to BOCES for including Adaptive Design Hudson Valley in this work and for creating space for so many different perspectives at the table. We’re looking forward to continuing the conversation and seeing where this collaborative effort takes us!

Four custom-built chairs recently made their way to the Pre-K classrooms at Abilities First in Hyde Park! 💙

Each chair was designed around the individual needs of the student who will use it, with thoughtful adaptations to support positioning, stability, comfort, and participation throughout the school day.

These projects are a great example of what happens when Occupational Therapy, educators, fabricators, and students work together to solve a specific problem. Rather than asking a student to fit into a standard chair, we can adapt the chair to better fit them.
