🌎✈️ Student Spotlight: Nick Rave

This semester, URI Kinesiology student Nick Rave took his education beyond the classroom and across the globe while studying abroad in New Zealand.

“Deciding to go abroad for this past semester has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in the past few years. From exploring places I’ve heard of all my life to meeting people from around the world, this experience has opened my eyes in multiple ways.”

Nick chose New Zealand because it was the “farthest place from Rhode Island,” and the decision paid off. Over the past five months, he immersed himself in new cultures, built lifelong connections, and explored incredible destinations including Australia and Fiji.

“Though I’ll be excited to return to Rhode Island this summer, I feel I have grown connected to the area I’ve been in and am extremely thankful for the opportunity to see the world from a different perspective.”

We are proud to see our students embrace opportunities that broaden their perspectives, challenge them to grow, and create unforgettable experiences.

In honor of the recent holiday…💚🇮🇪
Meet URI kinesiology student Delaney Sullivan 👣💙
Balancing science and dance, Delaney is making moves both in the lab and on the world stage. A dedicated Irish step dancer, she recently competed at the World Championships—while also leading innovative research comparing ballet dancers and Irish step dancers performing en pointe.
Her work aims to uncover key differences in injury risk and training needs across dance styles, helping keep performers stronger and safer. 🩰
Recognized for her impact, Delaney was awarded the Undergraduate Research Award to support her study—just one more step in an already incredible journey!!

The University of Rhode Island’s National Biomechanics Day will welcome nearly 500 students from 12 high schools across Rhode Island on Wednesday, April 8, 2026!

Students will explore biomechanics and kinesiology through more than 25 hands-on demonstrations and interactive competitions held in Mackal Field House. Featured stations include motion capture, augmented and virtual reality, wearable technology, and more.

This year’s event has been in planning since early summer of last year, led by Dr. Susan D’Andrea and second-year master’s student Kylie McPhee.

With the support of URI Kinesiology, undergraduate and graduate students in the biomechanics group have worked extensively to create an engaging, innovative, and impactful STEM outreach experience that celebrates biomechanics and related fields.

If you are interested in volunteering, please scan the QR code on the final slide. For additional information, contact [email protected].

Happy National Biomechanics Day! 🦵⚙️🏃

We’re proud to share that PhD candidate Melissa Lodge has been selected as a finalist in the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School!

The 3MT® competition challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes, using only one static slide—making complex ideas clear, engaging, and accessible to a general audience. It’s a true test of both research impact and communication skills!

Melissa’s presentation, “Red Light, Green Light: Rethinking How We Screen for REDs in Female Athletes,” highlights innovative work happening right here in Kinesiology.

📅 Thursday, March 26
