He’s been saying this for years, and people still don’t seem to get it.

The assumption — repeated endlessly by people who haven’t thought it through — is that without a belief in an afterlife, existence must feel hollow. That atheists are somehow wandering around in a grey fog of pointlessness, waiting for a death that means nothing. Ricky Gervais finds this idea not just wrong, but completely backwards.

If this is the only life you get, it isn’t worthless — it’s priceless. Every single day becomes more valuable, not less, when you accept that there isn’t another one queued up behind it. You stop waiting. You stop deferring. You stop tolerating things that don’t deserve your time, because your time is genuinely finite and genuinely yours. The people who have something to die for — a cause, a doctrine, a promise of paradise — are the ones who can afford to be cavalier with the life they actually have. Ricky doesn’t have that luxury. None of us do, if we’re being honest.

He isn’t nihilistic. He’s the opposite. He cares enormously — about animals, about honesty, about the people he loves, about not wasting a single day. That’s not the behaviour of someone with nothing to live for. That’s the behaviour of someone who understands exactly how much is at stake.

Does the idea that this is the only shot we get make you want to live it better, or does it terrify you? Be honest in the comments.
