Thank you NYSDOH - New York State Health Department Commissioner Dr. McDonald for shining a light on the critical work WIC is doing to keep infants, young children, and pregnant and new moms well nourished during critical stages of life.

Kudos(!) to Onondaga County WIC staff; the county's participation is up a whopping 20% since 2020 and now provides public health and nutrition services to 2,000 infants, 6,000 toddlers and preschoolers, and 2,000 pregnant women or new moms across the county!

Indeed, decades of participant centered care now coupled with practical modernized remote services and updated science based nutrition benefits has resulted in an eye popping 28% increase in WIC participation across the state. Let's keep up the leadership in this cornerstone of maternal and child public health!

Due to rising enrollment, the state’s health commissioner, James McDonald, M.D., stopped by Syracuse to highlight the downtown clinic’s success.

The need for food never ceases; as McDonald pointed out, over one in four New York State residents struggles with food insecurity.

Yes! The science recommended fruit/veggie benefit in WIC is a primary reason why NYSWIC child participation grew nearly 48% (!!!) from approximately 190,000 to 282,000 children, significantly leading the way for overall statewide participation growth of 28.5% (3x national average!) (361,000-464,000 total participants) since early 2020.

Congress decides whether or not we keep up this momentum and pledge to nourish our youngest nutritionally at risk New Yorkers. And Both proposed funding bills in the US Senate and House cut them instead.

New York State Budget Protects Nutrition Security to Many with Key Investments; Overlooks a Cornerstone of Our Commitment to Maternal and Child Health

The state budget was finalized last week with $0 additional funding for NYSDOH WIC, despite a 28% growth in participation since 2020. We’ve been told there were very few legislative add-on items.

We will continue to advocate relentlessly for adequate funding to support WIC’s vital participant centered nutrition services for the 460,000 New Yorkers who participate and the 200,000 more who could, and invite you to join us.

Please see WICANYS’ state budget statement, and share/link to it in your organization’s communications.
