šŸ—£ļø "Is that cracking sound normal when you adjust me?
Yup — and it’s actually not what makes you feel better. Let me explain šŸ‘‡
When I deliver an adjustment, it’s a quick, precise impulse to a joint that isn’t moving well.
Each of your joints contain nerves that tell your brain how that joint is moving moving. When the joint isn’t moving properly, your nervous system can create a protective reflex — tightening muscles around it. That can lead to stiffness, pain, and dysfunction.
šŸ’” A precise and gentle chiropractic adjustment interrupts that cycle and helps the body relax and restore normal movement.
But the cracking sound? That’s just gas (usually nitrogen) in the joint fluid forming tiny bubbles from the pressure change during an adjustment — totally harmless and not essential to improve function or encourage healing.
āœ… Sometimes you hear a pop, sometimes you don’t. Either way, the goal is better function, not sound effects.
In short: The ā€œcrackā€ is just a side effect — not the goal.
What is the goal? Restoring movement, calming the nervous system, and helping your body function better.

Curious how this helps you feel better, move better, and heal more naturally?

I went on a hike with a friend this weekend, and from her questions, I realized that many of the people I see myself serving with natural health care—like my dear friend—are a bit unsure of what it is like to visit my chiropractic clinic in Butler. So, let me take a moment to clear that up and help you know exactly what to expect.
The first visit is an important one! It’s my opportunity to gather information, perform a thorough exam, and take the time to explain my findings, as well as outline a plan of action to get you back to your healthiest self as efficiently as possible.

Here’s what you can expect during your first visit:
• My full attention: I will be the one to take your information, conduct the exam, explain the results, and outline your treatment plan. There are no assistants handling these parts of your first visit; it’s all me, from start to finish. This time is just as much for you to get to know me and my approach as it is for me to get to know you.

• A similar experience to a doctor’s visit: Since I have the same level of responsibility to diagnose a patient as a general practitioner, when you come to my clinic, it will fee like any other doctor appointment. You’ll be asked for some background and demographic information. I’ll ask questions about the issue that brings you to me, as well as about your past medical history, diet, and exercise routines.

• A thorough exam: Based on the information we gathered in the beginning of the visit, I’ll perform a physical exam to help me understand your specific situation. This may involve asking you to walk across the room, bend, or twist, as well as checking your heart, lungs, and blood pressure. I might also ask you to perform certain movements to assess your nervous system.

• Personalized treatment: After gathering all this information, I’ll have a clear picture of your health, and I’ll create a treatment plan tailored specifically for you. This plan isn’t just about solving your current issue, but also about helping you avoid it in the future. The irony of my job is that I’m constantly working to teach my patients how not to need me in the long run!

• Your ā€˜report of findings’: After the exam, I’ll sit down with you to go over my findings and explain how I can help you. I’ll provide a detailed treatment plan and explain how each part of the plan will contribute to your healing process. If needed, I may refer you to another specialist. But no matter what, your health and well-being come first, and my goal is always to do what’s best for you.

• Treatment on the same day: If everything checks out, and there’s no need for imaging or a referral, I will begin your treatment on the same day. I schedule an hour for all first consultations to ensure I have the time to give you the attention and care you deserve.

At Back to Basics Chiropractic, holistic care for the entire family is at the heart of everything I do. If you have any questions or need more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. The best way to contact me is to call or text at 973-370-0260.
Be well,
Dr. Liz Merritt, D.C.
