We are disheartened by the Department of Education’s decision to transfer oversight of special education and civil rights. Students with disabilities need and deserve vital services and support, and we remain fiercely committed to advocating for our community.

What this means right now:
- Services won't change today. School districts and the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) still manage day-to-day special education services.
- The funding is still there. The total amount of federal (IDEA) funding isn't changing immediately, but how that money is handled and handed out will change.

Music had always been a constant in my life, and I had a long-standing interest in psychology. Music therapy ended up being a natural intersection of both. I now primarily work with autistic individuals and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs), including many adults.

Thank you to Special Olympics Washington for having us at their spring games over the weekend! We had a blast connecting with people and spreading the word about WAA, and our lollipop ring toss was a hit!

Happy Pride Month! This month and every month, we acknowledge and celebrate the intersectionality of identities within our community. For many, the journey of self-discovery in terms of gender and sexuality can resonate with the autistic experience of navigating a world with neurotypical and heteronormative standards. While there is still research to be done surrounding the significant intersection between autism and gender/sexuality, there is no doubt that there is a need for continuing growth in acceptance and understanding for people with these identities. The Washington Autism Alliance is dedicated to providing resources and support to all members of our community.
