When people hear the word “attention,” they often think about simply paying attention.
But attention is one of the cognitive skills that supports everything else.
If attention is impaired, it becomes harder to learn new information, remember details, follow conversations, complete tasks, and stay organized. In many ways, attention serves as the foundation for other cognitive skills, including memory and executive function.
After a stroke, brain injury, concussion, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurological condition, attention difficulties can make everyday activities feel much more challenging.
It’s also one of the many areas speech therapists can help address through cognitive rehabilitation.
Which attention challenge do you struggle with most: tuning out distractions, following conversations in noisy places, multitasking, or staying focused on a task?
