Psychosis is one of the most misunderstood mental health symptoms. Let’s break it down here. Hi, my name is Joel David. I’m a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. So psychosis is when someone loses touch with reality. This can include hallucinations, like hearing or seeing things that are not really there, or delusions, which are fixed false beliefs. So psychosis can happen in conditions such as schizophrenia, severe depression, bipolar disorders, or even from high stress or a lack of sleep. The good news is that it’s treatable. Treatment usually includes antipsychotic medications, and just as important, I always recommend psychotherapy along with a strong support system to help with recovery and insight. Early treatment makes a big difference. If you or someone you know is experiencing psychosis, it’s important to seek professional help as soon as possible. You don’t have to navigate this alone. Help is available.
