Peanut butter and beans might not seem glamorous—but in many kitchens, especially those supported by Women, Infants & Children (WIC) benefits, they’re absolute essentials. They're shelf-stable, protein-packed, and build up in the pantry faster than they get used.Since I do the WIC shopping for m...

Next insurance PSA...Farm Bureau here in TN provides health insurance through UMR, which is associated with UHC somehow. I am in-network with UHC, so also UMR. Farm Bureau policies do NOT have to follow the Affordable Care Act (ACA). They have a very strict pre-existing conditions policy. I have learned that this policy extends to preventive breastfeeding care. If a mom changes her insurance to Farm Bureau after she has already gotten lactation care, UMR will deny all further care as a pre-existing "condition". This is so wrong in so many ways! It is like saying - oh wait, you ate food and talked to someone about it, so therefore any further care you get that relates to eating food is a pre-existing condition. I don't even know who or how to fight this one.

Cigna has not established in-network lactation counseling, as required by federal law. Federal guidance on the preventive services clarify that, “… if a plan or issuer does not have in its network a provider who can provide the particular service, then the plan or issuer must cover the item or service when performed by an out-of-network provider and not impose cost-sharing with respect to the item or service.”

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health insurance plans must cover all FDA-approved, cleared, or granted birth control – and related services – and other important preventive health care needs, including breastfeeding supplies, lactation consultations, and well-woman visits.
