There are stories that inspire us.
And then there are stories that change us.
Four years ago, Travis Godfrey learned he had Alport kidney disease—a diagnosis that was already woven into his family's history. His mother, Arlene, spent sixteen years on dialysis before losing her battle. He has also lost aunts, cousins, and generations of loved ones to this disease.
Today, that same diagnosis has been passed on to both of his daughters.
Most people would quietly carry that burden.
Instead, Travis chose courage.
He chose to share his family's story so others would understand the reality of kidney disease. He chose to turn pain into purpose by making VW Drag Fest & Show more than a car event—it became a way to honor those lost, fight for those still battling, and support families across East Tennessee through the East Tennessee Kidney Foundation.
At ETKF, we are incredibly honored that Travis has trusted us with his family's story.
His willingness to be vulnerable reminds us that kidney disease isn't just a diagnosis—it affects generations, changes families forever, and requires extraordinary strength to face each day.
Thank you, Travis, for your courage. Thank you for refusing to let hardship define your family. And thank you for giving hope to thousands of East Tennesseans who are walking a similar journey.
On August 15, we'll gather for more than Volkswagens. We'll gather to celebrate resilience, remember those we've lost, and stand beside every family still fighting.
