I'm Cindy and I have been a CNA for 6 years, and care giving has always been a passion of mine. I love hospice because it allows me to provide comfort, dignity and compassionate care to patients and their families during such an important time in their lives. Being able to bring peace, and meaningful moments to someone's final journey is incredibly rewarding to me.

We had so much fun bringing our VR experience to The Lantern at Morning Pointe of Hardin Valley! Our theme this month was Vermont, so we took the residents on a skiing adventure, and they absolutely LOVED it! 😍

AT THE BEDSIDE

“She's Just Getting Unsteady.”

Or is something changing?

Mr. J has had three falls in six weeks.
No major injury.
So each time, everyone breathes a sigh of relief.

But look closer.

He used to shower independently. Now staff assists him.
He's eating about half of his meals. He's lost noticeable weight.
He's spending more time in his chair.
And after the last fall, it took two staff members to get him up.

The question isn't simply whether the falls caused an injury.

The question is what the falls are occurring alongside.

When multiple small changes begin appearing together, they may be telling one larger story.

THE QUESTION TO ASK:

Is this an isolated event or part of progressive decline?

The Falls Are Adding Up. One fall may be an accident. A pattern deserves attention.

One fall can happen to anyone. But what about three falls?
What about falls accompanied by increasing weakness, weight loss, confusion, or dependence with ADLs?

Falls can be more than isolated accidents. They may accompany changes in strength, balance, cognition, medication tolerance, nutrition, or overall disease progression.

Instead of asking: “Why did they fall?”
Also ask: “What else has changed?”

Look backwards.

Are they walking less? Sleeping more? Eating less? Requiring more assistance? Recovering more slowly?

The fall may be the event that gets everyone's attention.

The pattern surrounding the fall may tell us much more.

Staff spotlight... Paige Penrod, Health Aide Shalom hospice of Greater Knoxville

I’m a proud mom of four and a compassionate CNA who truly believes that caring for others is more than just a job—it’s a part of who I am. My family means everything to me, and being a mother has taught me the importance of patience, kindness, understanding, and loving people through every stage of life.

I have always had a heart for helping others, and there is something incredibly rewarding about knowing that even the smallest thing I do can make a difference in someone’s day. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, a helping hand, a smile, or simply making someone feel seen and cared for, I cherish every opportunity to make a positive impact.

I genuinely love my job and the people I have the privilege of caring for. Being a CNA allows me to give the same compassion, love, and care to others that I value so deeply in my own family. I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to serve, connect with people, and hopefully leave a little piece of kindness wherever I go.

🎃🍂 We’re creeping into the Halloween season, and what better way to celebrate than with a little pumpkin patch fun! 🧡

Yesterday, Alison with Shalom Hospice and Palliative Care had the sweetest opportunity to bring a pumpkin patch to our community at River Grove Health & Rehab in Loudon! We had such a wonderful time painting pumpkins, sharing smiles, and making special memories together. 🎨🎃

At Shalom, we love finding meaningful ways to connect with our community and bring a little extra joy to those we serve. We’re so thankful for opportunities like this! 🧡🍁

AT THE BEDSIDE

Meet Mrs. W.
What are you seeing?

Mrs. W is 84 and has CHF. Three months ago, she walked to meals with her walker.

Since then:
* Two hospitalizations
• One fall
• Now uses a wheelchair for longer distances
• Needs help bathing and dressing
• Sleeps much more during the day
• Eating less than before

Her daughter says:
“She's doing better since she got home.”
And she may be.
But she hasn't returned to where she was three months ago.

That's the bigger picture.
One hospitalization may be an event.
Repeated illness + incomplete recovery + increasing dependence may represent a trajectory of decline.

THE QUESTION TO ASK:

What has changed in the last 30–90 days?

Sometimes recognizing the pattern is the beginning of the right conversation.

🥽✨ We took VR to Rocky Top Care Center for the FIRST time today! 🎉

What a fun experience getting to introduce residents and staff to a whole new way of exploring the world! 🌎💙

There were smiles, laughs, a little bit of “WOW!” and definitely some memorable moments! 😄

We love finding creative ways to bring connection, joy, and meaningful experiences to the communities we serve. 💙

A New Baseline
Did the patient recover... or simply leave the hospital?

A hospitalization ends. The decline doesn't always end with it. Before the hospitalization, your patient walked to the dining room. Now she uses a wheelchair.
Before the infection, he dressed himself. Now he needs assistance.

Before the fall, she lived independently. Now her daughter stays every night.
A patient can be medically “better” without returning to their previous level of function.

When each illness leaves a patient a little weaker, a little more dependent, or a little less able to recover, look at the pattern, not just the individual event.

THE QUESTION TO ASK:

Has this patient actually returned to baseline?

Progressive loss of baseline function deserves a closer look.

Our Volunteer Coordinator, Emerson had the immense pleasure of teaching a painting class to a group of participants from the West Knoxville Senior Center. They traveled back to September of 1889 in Southern France and recreated Van Gogh’s painting, “Wheat Field with Cypresses.” Each member painted their own vibrant cloudy sky, blue mountain peaks, warm field of wheat, and tall statuesque cypress trees. It was a lovely afternoon, full of laughter, smiles, and paint that didn’t always stay on the canvas. Thank you to the West Knoxville Senior Center for providing the supplies!
