Your child starts kindergarten…
…and suddenly you remember your own first day.

Your child struggles socially…
…and you remember what it felt like to be left out.

Your child gets a teacher you love…
…and you remember the teacher who made you feel small.

Your child becomes more independent…
…and you notice feelings of fear, sadness, or even rejection that seem bigger than the moment calls for.

Sometimes, your child's experience brushes up against your own unfinished experiences.

You may know logically that this is their story, not yours, but your nervous system may not always make that distinction.

This doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.

It means you're human.

And sometimes, EMDR can help you process the experiences that are being stirred up, so you can be more present for the child in front of you, not the child you once were.

Because healing your story can change the way you experience theirs.

Your nervous system doesn't always know the difference between “new” and “unsafe.”

And the start of a new school year can bring a lot of new.

New routines. New teachers. New expectations. New friendships. New levels of independence.

For parents, it can also mean navigating a new stage of your relationship with your child.

Maybe you're sending them off to kindergarten.
Maybe they're starting middle school.
Maybe they're driving themselves to school.
Maybe they're leaving for college.

Each transition can bring a mix of excitement, pride, grief, anxiety, and uncertainty.

And sometimes our instinct is to eliminate the uncertainty, to plan more, worry more, or try to make sure everything goes smoothly.

But what if the goal isn't certainty?

What if the goal is building enough trust in yourself, and your child, to navigate what comes?

You don't have to know exactly how this next chapter will unfold.

Neither does your child.

Take the next step.
Stay curious.
Make room for the feelings.
Let the rest unfold.

One of the most powerful shifts in healing is learning to stand with ourselves instead of against ourselves.

So often, we’ve been taught to prioritize others’ comfort, opinions, or approval over our own truth. But as Maya Angelou reminds us, wisdom comes in choosing to be on our own side.

What would it look like to support yourself the way you would a dear friend? If this feels hard or even impossible, we are here to help.

Trauma isn't always about what happened.
Sometimes it's about what didn't happen.

The comfort you didn't receive.
The protection you didn't experience.
The questions no one asked.
The apology that never came.
The safety you couldn't count on.
The space to be a child.
The permission to have feelings.
The reassurance that you were enough.

What was missing can shape us, too.

Healing includes learning to recognize those unmet needs with compassion.
Sometimes healing means grieving what you never got to have.

The Creekside team is here to help you on your healing journey. Reach out today.

The Most Important Conversation Is Often the Second One. 💟

The first conversation may happen in the middle of frustration, hurt, or misunderstanding.

The second conversation is often where repair begins.

It's the moment you come back after emotions have settled and say:

"I've been thinking about our conversation."

"I realize I became defensive."

"I'm sorry for how I responded."

"Can we try that again?"

"Help me understand what you were experiencing."

These moments don't erase what happened, but they communicate something powerful:

"Our relationship matters enough for me to come back."

Repair isn't about having the perfect words or pretending the conflict never happened. It's about taking a step toward one another with humility, curiosity, and care.

Research consistently shows that healthy relationships aren't defined by never experiencing conflict, they're strengthened by the ability to reconnect after it. Every small repair is an opportunity to rebuild trust, deepen understanding, and create greater emotional safety.

💟 Self-Care Saturday Challenge: Is there a conversation from this week that's worth revisiting—not to rehash the disagreement, but to repair the connection?

At Creekside Counseling & Wellness, we believe healing happens not because relationships are perfect, but because people are willing to reconnect, repair, and grow together.

If you are struggling to turn back toward each other following an argument, to engage in the second conversation, reach out, we want to help.

🧠 Why EMDR Goes Beyond Talk Therapy and Why That’s Important

Talk therapy can be incredibly valuable. It helps us gain insight, make connections, and feel seen. But sometimes, understanding why we feel the way we do isn’t enough to create lasting change.

That’s where EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) comes in.

EMDR doesn’t just focus on talking about your experiences, it works with how those experiences are stored in your brain and body. When distressing events aren’t fully processed, they can continue to trigger strong emotional and physical responses long after the event is over. This can happen without us really knowing what is going on or why which can add to your overall distress.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess these stuck memories so they no longer feel overwhelming, letting your brain do what it was designed to do: heal. Before, the brain was too overwhelmed to allow the brain's natural healing process to kick in. Now, with support, it can.

Healing beyond words, EMDR Therapy.
