If your sensitive kid has sent a text like this or even said something like this before…hi! I see you! And you so not alone!

A lot of times kids cope in the only way they know how. If giving up feels easier in the moment… guess what they’ll do!?

Doesn’t mean they can’t (you know that). Usually points to them trying to manage a difficult emotion, like overwhelm, in maybe the only way they know how, at that time.

It’s natural to want to fix it or make it better because seeing them struggle is hard on everyone. When we react and jump to fix, we model that some emotions need to be extinguished. This just tends to make those emotions bigger because nothing is released and (in turn) models that some emotions are “bad” or unsafe. I know this isn’t your intention but this is how their little brains are working. And you already know, they’re watching and learning. 👀

In play therapy, I help sensitive kids (who tend to expect the worst) learn that their emotions aren’t something to fear or push away. They get to work through and process their worries in a way that makes sense to then (play). They also learn to feel safer in their bodies, have greater trust in themselves and understand that stressful thoughts don’t make up who they are. Along the way, i also support parents in knowing how to respond in those moments in ways that help their kid feel safe, understood and more capable over time.

If you’re looking for more support for your kid who seems afraid of the worst, reach out with the link in my bio to schedule a free intro call to learn more about how I can help!

When kids are hard on themselves, is sooo normal (and almost instinctual) to want to jump in and fix or reassure. Shows you care and is usually coming from a really good place there. And of course, if they’re unsafe, DO THAT!

However, when kids are allowed to problem solve, they learn, over time, that they are capable. This is what can create a foundation for kids to feel an internal sense of “I got this.”

Raise your hand 🙋🏻‍♀️ if this is familiar. You’re soo not alone.

When kids are sensitive, even *gentle* correction can feel hard on the inside (especially when they’re already hard on themselves), leading to frustration, shutdown, or sadness. They’re not trying to be defiant.. just trying to communicate that this is overwhelming.

Play therapy helps kids feel safer with mistakes so feedback doesn’t hit so hard.

When kids say things like “I can’t do it,” they’re not asking you to “fix it” (cause emotions aren’t for fixing anyway-it’s how they feel). They’re also not asking you to convince them that they’re capable.

Sometimes they’re just simply communicating, “This feels really hard right now.”

They’re wanting to feel heard and understood not fixed. This right here is part of what helps sensitive kids begin to trust themselves, even in the really tough moments. 🫶

Sometimes avoidance, clinginess, shutting down, or needing things “just right” is really a kid feeling a whole lot underneath.

Kids may not know how to SAY, “I’m anxious,” so they often SHOW it instead.

If you read this post and felt like “that’s my kid”, I’d love to support them. Reach out with link in bio to learn more about play therapy and how it can help 💛
