For students at UT, Pellissippi State, and Carson-Newman, winter break is one of the few stretches of the year with no classes, no exams, and time to recover. That makes it a popular window for LASIK, but the planning has to start earlier than most people expect.

First comes a consultation, then a pre-operative exam that takes about two to three hours and includes dilation. Your prescription should also be stable, since correcting a prescription that is still changing does not make sense for anyone. Fitting all of that in before finals week is a lot easier than squeezing it in during finals.

Most LASIK patients are back to their normal routines quickly. PRK sharpens over a few weeks rather than a few days, so if PRK turns out to be the better fit for your eyes, the earlier part of break matters even more.

With most lens implants used in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange, the power of the lens is set before surgery and stays that way. The Light Adjustable Lens works differently, and it is one of the options we offer.

After the lens is placed and your eyes have had time to heal, its power can be customized using gentle ultraviolet light treatments. You get to live with the result first, at your desk and behind the wheel, and then the lens can be adjusted toward what works best for you before the final setting is locked in.

There is one tradeoff to plan around. Until the adjustments are finished, you wear special UV-protective glasses as directed, so everyday sunlight does not change the lens on its own. For many people, a few weeks of that is a fair exchange.

Open enrollment season is coming up at a lot of East Tennessee workplaces. It is the one time each year you choose how much to put into a flexible spending account (FSA) for the year ahead. If vision correction is on your list for 2027, that choice is worth making on purpose.

Laser vision correction, including LASIK and PRK, is generally considered an eligible medical expense for FSAs and health savings accounts. With most health FSAs, your full annual amount is available from the start of the plan year, even before it has all come out of your paychecks. Limits and rules vary by employer, so check with your benefits administrator before you pick a number.

For anything not covered, we also offer financing options.

October is Halloween Safety Month, and if you have had LASIK or PRK in the last few weeks, a few costume habits deserve a pass this year while your eyes heal.

Eye makeup, glitter, and face paint near your eyes can carry bacteria or flake into a healing eye, so they are typically off limits for at least the first week, and longer after PRK. Costume contact lenses are out, both because your eyes are still healing and because no contact lens should go in without an eye doctor's fitting. Bonfire smoke and dusty hayrides can irritate healing eyes, so sunglasses help. Masks that rub against your face make it easy to touch your eyes without noticing, and rubbing is the habit to avoid most.

Today, October 8, is World Sight Day, a global day led by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, and this year's campaign asks everyone to .

According to the World Health Organization, the two leading causes of vision impairment and blindness worldwide are refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) and cataracts. Both are correctable. Yet two out of three people in low-income countries who need glasses do not have them, and worldwide, one in two people who need cataract surgery cannot get it.

That is a lot to take in from East Tennessee, where an updated prescription, a contact lens fitting, or a cataract evaluation is usually a short drive away.

So today is a good day to take care of your own eyes, whatever that looks like for you. For some people it is a new pair of glasses. Archery season is open across East Tennessee, and anyone who hunts in glasses knows the routine. It means fumbling for them in the dark at four-thirty in the morning, watching the lenses bead up in a drizzle, and wiping them on the only dry corner of your sleeve right as something finally moves at the edge of the clearing.

Glasses and contacts both come with tradeoffs out there. Glasses make it harder to line your eye up behind a scope, and they cloud over the second your breath hits cold air. Contacts dry out after hours of sitting still in the wind, and a tree stand is not a great place to fix one that folds.

None of that is a reason to have a procedure. But if managing your vision has become part of every hunt, it is worth knowing what your options are. For some people that is LASIK or PRK, and for others it is a different approach entirely.

Short version: the correction itself is permanent. Your eyes keep aging. Those are two different things, and conflating them is where most of the confusion lives.

The reshaping done during LASIK does not undo itself. What changes is everything around it. Most people hit their mid forties and find reading vision shifting, which happens to everyone, LASIK or not, because that is the natural lens stiffening rather than the cornea moving. Later, a cataract can form in that same lens, and it can still be treated normally afterward.

A small number of patients do see some regression, most often those who started with very high prescriptions, and an enhancement is frequently possible.

That phrase still comes up constantly, and it is a holdover from a version of cataract surgery that ended decades ago. There genuinely was a time when the lens had to harden considerably before it could be removed. That is not how any of this works now.

Today the timing question is not really about the cataract. It is about you. Have you quietly stopped driving after dark? Does glare on the interstate bother you in a way it did not used to? Are you turning on every lamp in the room to read, or losing faces across a restaurant?

When daily life has reorganized itself around your vision, that is the signal, whether or not anyone has used the word ready. Waiting longer does not improve the result. It just costs you the months in between.

There is a specific experience that comes with a very strong prescription. Not being able to see the far end of the pool. Lenses thick enough that you have developed opinions about frame shapes. The particular dread of tearing a contact on the second day of a trip. Being the person who genuinely cannot function in the ten seconds between waking up and finding their glasses.

For a long time, those were the patients told their prescription was simply too high to correct. EVO ICL changed that answer. It is a thin lens placed inside the eye, in front of your natural lens, and because it does not rely on reshaping the cornea, it reaches prescriptions that corneal procedures cannot.

Twenty-five years ago today.

We remember the people who did not come home on September 11, 2001, and we remember the families who have carried that morning with them ever since. Twenty-five birthdays. Twenty-five graduations, weddings, and ordinary Tuesdays with someone missing from them.

A quarter of a century is long enough that many people among us now have no memory of that day at all, only what they have been told about it. That makes saying their names out loud matter more, not less.

Today our thoughts are with those who were lost, those who survived, and everyone still carrying it with them.
