We were proud to host the Cervical Spine Research Society Emerging Leaders Course in our Academic Center. We welcomed an outstanding group of early-career spine surgeons and faculty for a weekend focused on cervical spine innovation, mentorship, leadership development, and hands-on collaboration. This course prompted discussions, shared learning, and connections that continue to advance the future of spine care. It was co-chaired by our very own Michael H. McCarthy, MD and Christopher Shaffrey, MD.

After years of carrying heavy video equipment, Rick suffered from chronic low back pain and tolerated it for as long as he could. When he came to Indiana Spine Group, Dr. Daniel Kim immediately identified the source of pain that Rick was experiencing. Since recovering from surgery, Rick is completely back to normal, returning to his daily activities, exercising, and playing baseball with his grandchildren. Because of Dr. Kim, Rick got his retirement back.

ISG is excited to share that Dr. Michael McCarthy served as moderator at this year’s Spine Research Society (CSRS) Spine Summit — and presented a talk on: “The Risks and Benefits of Crossing the Cervicothoracic Junction with Posterior Cervical Fusions.” This session dove into the real-world decision-making behind stopping at C7 versus extending into the thoracic spine, including biomechanics, risk factors, and long-term outcomes.

Additionally, Dr. McCarthy attended the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) Board and Committee Chair meeting while in Phoenix. He currently serves as the co-chair of the Education Committee for CSRS.

Al is a retired residential construction worker, married for 23 years, with a 20-year-old son who is a professional race car driver and college student. While traveling for his son’s race, Al injured his neck after tripping over a suitcase, leading to worsening symptoms that caused severe pain, numbness, and loss of use in his left arm. Daily activities and driving became difficult.

After consulting Indiana Spine Group, Dr. Farren and Dr. McCarthy revealed cervical radiculopathy with significant nerve compression and neurological decline. Dr. McCarthy recommended immediate, minimally invasive surgery through the front of the neck. The surgery was successful, with rapid pain relief and an easier recovery than expected.

Following surgery, Al regained his mobility and independence, allowing him to resume everyday tasks and travel again. He credits Dr. Farren and Dr. McCarthy with restoring his quality of life, ability to continue supporting his son and enjoying daily activities.
