William Alonzo "Bill" Mitchell

William Alonzo "Bill" Mitchell, 95, passed away on October 1 3, 2026, at the Veterans Home in Kosciusko, Mississippi.

Bill was born on July 16, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas, the only son of William Albert Mitchell and Alonzo Moore Mitchell. His family moved to Ethel, Mississippi, when he was a young boy. After graduating from Ethel High School, he attended Wood Junior College in Mathiston, Mississippi.

While at Wood Junior College, Bill met Carolyn Dupuy, beginning a love story that would span 72 years of marriage.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Following his discharge, he attended Mississippi State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He furthered his education by earning a degree from the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University (LSU), preparing him for a distinguished career in banking.

He began and ended his 38-year banking career at Merchants & Farmers Bank in Kosciusko. Along the way, he also served at Citizens Bank & Trust Company in Louisville, Mississippi, and Peoples Bank of Mississippi in Kosciusko.

Service was a defining part of Bill's life. He held numerous leadership positions in community organizations and his church, always willing to give his time and talents to others. In 1986, he and Carolyn were part of the original cast of the First United Methodist Church Passion Play.

Following his retirement in 1998, Bill and Carolyn joined NOMADS Mission Volunteers, combining their love of travel with their desire to serve. Traveling in their RV, they helped churches, camps, and communities through construction, repairs, maintenance, and disaster rebuilding. They also enjoyed several organized RV tours, including memorable trips to Nova Scotia and Alaska.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Beverly Mitchell Casteel, and his parents, William Albert and Alonzo Moore Mitchell.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 72 years, Carolyn Dupuy Mitchell; his daughter, Carol Anne (David) Thompson of Louisville, Mississippi; his son-in-law, David Casteel of Kosciusko, Mississippi; his granddaughter, Kaci (Kyle) McDiIl of Starkville; and his grandsons, Russell (Callie) Casteel of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Justin (Hailey) Thompson of Starkville, Mississippi; and Rhyne (Jessi) Thompson of Ethel, Mississippi. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy for generations to come.

Bill's funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Redbud Springs Cornerstone Church in Kosciusko. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Gary Glazier will officiate the service, and Russell Casteel will officiate at the graveside. Burial will follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Kosciusko.

Betty Jean Wasson, 91, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2026, and 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Tyler Hunt will officiate the service.

Betty was born on April 30, 1935, to Clyde Adams and Mildred Bain Adams in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She was dedicated to her work as a seamstress. Betty was a member of Marvin Chapel Methodist Church.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Lauran Sanders, of Ethel, Mississippi; grandchildren, Bradley Sanders (Terri Lyn), and Daniel Sanders; many great-grandchildren; brother, Frank Adams (Delorise) of McCool, Mississippi; and sisters, Annette Weaver of Kosciusko, Mississippi and Bonnie Barns of Bogue Chitto, Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Adams and Mildred Bain Adams, and granddaughter, Melissa Sanders.

Serving as pallbearers are Bradley Sanders, Brayden Sanders, Riley Watson, Daniel Sanders, Scott Wasson, and Tyler Weaver.

Beverly Mitchell Casteel

Beverly Mitchell Casteel, of Kosciusko, was born December, 2, 1959 and died at the age of 66 on September 30 in Jackson after a long struggle with cancer. No stranger to battles, Beverly’s end of life mirrored her fighting spirit: not conceding an inch until there was nothing left to fight with. After graduating from Kosciusko High School, Beverly attended Wood Junior College where she received an Associate Degree. She then attended Mississippi State University where she thrived in academic work receiving a B.A. degree in English and an M.A. degree in English.

Beverly met David Casteel while at Wood Junior College in Mathiston, Mississippi. They fell in love and were later married in 1979. Russell was born in 1982 despite a plethora of doctors suggesting the unlikely birth of a child due to her many health challenges. As the granddaughter, daughter, niece, and sister of lifelong educators she fell in step with the family vocation. Beverly taught at many excellent and beloved schools including Starkville High School, Natchez High School, South Leake High School, Kosciusko Junior High School (where she once hilariously paddled her 8th grade son), and Kosciusko High School. Her thousands of students both adored and feared her.

After teaching English for many years, she transitioned to become a librarian where she strove to read every book in the high school library to connect with students about their interests and academic needs. Needless to say, proving Beverly wrong was not only unlikely but statistically impossible. In her retirement, she spent time as a copy editor of the Kosciusko Star-Herald newspaper, often moonlighting as a feature writer and photographer. She was a hobby antiquer, never turning away from something beautiful that was able to be saved or passed on. After David’s retirement, they spent time in care and companionship of their own parents as they entered their 90s.

Beverly was known as “Bebe” to her beloved grandchildren, whom she read to until the end of her life. She loved camping, the United Methodist church, the beloved Chapel Hill church where her husband pastored, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Shirley Barnes Casteel. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, David Casteel, of Kosciusko, MS; her parents Bill and Carolyn Mitchell of Kosciusko; her son Russell (Callie) Casteel of Murfreesboro, TN; her sister Carol Anne (David) Thompson of Louisville, MS; her father-in-law Tommy Casteel, of Columbus, MS; her niece Kaci (Kyle) McDill of Starkville, MS, her nephew Justin (Hailey) Thompson of Starkville, MS, and her nephew Rhyne (Jessi) Thompson of Ethel, MS; and her precious grandchildren Brown and Flora Casteel of Murfreesboro, TN. Visitation will be at Jordan Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 6th from 10:30-11:30 A.M. Graveside service to follow at Parkway Cemetery at 12:00 P.M.

Andrew “Drew” Middleton Chandler, 86, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, formerly of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel, with graveside service to follow at Parkway Cemetery. Rev. Barry Corbett will officiate the services.

Drew was born on July 18, 1940, in Mississippi, to John Andrew Chandler and Melne Middleton Chandler. Throughout his long and meaningful career in education, Drew dedicated himself to serving others as a teacher, track coach, principal, counselor, and football coach. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and athletics, touching the lives of countless students, athletes, families, and friends.A faithful member of First Baptist Church Kosciusko, Drew’s faith was an important part of his life. He was also an avid supporter of college football and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for the game with those around him.

Above all, Drew was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and cherished family man. His greatest joy was his family, and the love he shared with them will remain a lasting part of their lives. He will be remembered for the many lives he influenced, the wisdom he shared, and the love and devotion he gave so freely to his family.

Drew is survived by his beloved wife, Gayle R. Chandler; son, John M. (Laurabeth) Chandler of Sumrall, Mississippi; daughter, Kim C. (Stephen) Wilson of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; grandchildren, Andee (Stephen) Thomas of Mobile, Alabama, Lauren Chandler of Washington, D.C., Ryan Chandler of Oxford, Mississippi, Sadee Chandler, Austin Chandler, and Wyatt Chandler of Sumrall, Mississippi; great-grandchild, Chandler Thomas of Mobile, Alabama; and daughter-in-law, Lorie Chandler of Oxford, Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Andrew Chandler and Melne Middleton Chandler; his son, Mart Chandler; and his brother, John T. Chandler.

Serving as pallbearers are Robert Allen Knight, Tony Vanderford, Sammy Bryant, Stephen Thomas, Travis Eldridge, and Glenn George.

Honorary pallbearers are Rob Pickle, Dan Wright, Jimmy Jenkins, Dan West, Joe Wood, Billy Alderman, Harry Eskew, Shane Atkinson, Ryan Chandler, and Jimmy Stewart.

Peggy Ann Wasson Tyler, age 87, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away on September 13, 2026.

Visitation will be held at Jordan Funeral Home Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11:00 a.m. The service will be officiated by Brother Dan West, Rev. James Devenish, Rev. Phillip Palmertree.

Following the service she will be laid to rest at Parkway Cemetery.

Peggy was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kosciusko.

Peggy was best known to her family and to the community as “Ma T”. She served as executive assistant to Brother Dan West for many years at Central Hills Baptist Retreat, a Christian boys summer camp. She became well known as Ma T to the staff and campers.

Peggy loved music and was an amazing soloist for most of her adult life in the churches she attended. She loved life and people and had the most beautiful smile to all she met. She was full of fun, a spitfire and was always dressed to the nines!

Peggy celebrated life, yet most of all, her favorite thing was to celebrate her family!

Peggy leaves behind an abundance of memories that will be remembered and cherished by those she knew and loved.

She is survived by her daughters Toni Tyler White (Tom) of Franklin TN, Shelle Tyler Pinkard (Jimmy) of Kosciusko MS, her sister Judy Wasson Crowder (James) of Sallis MS, granddaughters Ashlee, Annie, Tollie, Lyndse, Aubrey, Cambrey, 12 great grandchildren. Nieces, Andrea Wasson, Elizabeth Garrett, Kimberly Mitchell.

Peggy is preceded in death by her father, Homer Wasson, her mother Lois Wasson, her brother, William T. Wasson, her daughter Cynthia Jones, and nephew Jeffrey Crowder.

Peggy was born on May 26, 1950, to Willis Eugene Dewitt and Evelyn Lucille Duhamel DeWitt in Ohio. She retired from manufacturing factory. Peggy loved her dolphins and cats.

Peggy is survived by her sons, John Oakes and Tommy Oakes of Kosciusko, Mississippi; daughter, Evelyn Desiree Moore of Carthage, Mississippi; grandchildren, Anthony Oakes, Lucy Pracht, Patrick Halderman, Alyssa Oakes, and Vada Freshour; great-grandchildren, Eli Oakes, Lucas Oakes, Madi Oakes, Peyton Pracht, and Walker Dell Bradford; brothers, Larry Dewitt and Bob Dewitt; and sisters, Phyllis Carnes, Gayle Carroll, and Kelly Musser.

Sammie was born on February 2, 1949, to his parents, Daniel John Tavares, Sr. and Hazel Ezzell Woods Tavares in Mississippi. He was a mechanic and worked hard every day. Sammie cherished his family and loved them dearly. He enjoyed visiting each family member.

Sammie is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Bruce and Candance (Tim) Ables; grandchildren, Alex Frank, Dylan (Courtney) Kyzer, Mayson (Logan Phillips) Kyzer, and Hailyn Kyzer; great-grandchildren, Delta Ann Kyzer, and Maddox Cole Phillips; brother, Ricky Earl (Sandy) Tavares; and sisters, Bobbie Carbo, Helen Tavares Farbe, Kay Tavares (Bob) Patrick, and Fay Tavares (Charles) Frazier.

Linda Thompson Rone

Our beloved mother, Linda Carolyn Thompson Rone, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2026. She was born July 3, 1943 in McCool, Mississippi. She was born to Davis Maxwell Thompson and Mamie Edith Thompson who preceded her in death.

Linda graduated from Ethel High School where she met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Dean. She returned to school to earn a degree in elementary education from Mississippi State University while working full-time and raising her children. She taught first grade for nearly three decades at Greenlee Elementary School where she made a lasting impact on countless children and was a mentor and friend to those who worked alongside her. Linda was also a faithful member of Williamsville Baptist Church and later Parkway Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday school teacher and church pianist.

Fulfilling many roles, Linda was a dear friend, but her consummate role was being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Called “Lin, Mama, Mam, and Nana" she was known for her quick wit, determination, fierce love and unwavering loyalty. She was primary caregiver for her husband Dean for many years and looked forward to the day when they would be reunited. Linda was an encourager, a comforter and always a steady guide to her family.

Linda was preceded in death by her husband (Doyle Dean Rone), her parents, her brothers (Ira Thompson, Davis Thompson, Ralph Thompson), and her sisters (Lillie Dee Kerr, Lucy Fowler, Mae Bowie, Lois Huffman, Thelma Mitchell, Edna Ruth Thompson).

She is survived by her sister, Janice McAdams (Douglas) of McCool. Her legacy and lasting impact will be carried on by her children Deanna Rone Brent (Randy) of Hattiesburg, Les Rone of Kosciusko, Laurie Hines (Tony) of Hernando, and Dr. Diana Rone Tate (Jason) of Pelahatchie. Her devotion will be remembered with love by her grandchildren Ross Brent, Davis Brent, Matt Miller (Kayla), Hayden Miller, Colton Miller, Rone Thomas Tate, Edie Tate and Max Tate.

Linda is also survived by great-granddaughters Lacie Miller, Eden Miller and Isla Miller.

Jordan Funeral Home of Kosciusko, MS, will provide funeral arrangements. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm and at Parkway Baptist Church on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 am. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at Parkway Baptist Church with interment taking place in Parkway Cemetery. Bro. Don Cook and Bro. Art Land will officiate. Ross Brent, Davis Brent, Matt Miller, Hayden Miller, Colton Miller, Rone Thomas Tate and Max Tate will serve as pallbearers and Edie Tate will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Doris “Little Granny Dean” Buford Dean, 101, of Kosciusko, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at her residence with her family. Doris was born on December 13, 1924, to Thomas Irvin Buford and Plummie Crowell Buford in Starkville, Mississippi. She married Hal Clark Dean, Sr. and they raised their 5 children in Kosciusko Community. Doris was employed at Lenoards Department Store for 38 years. She met many people while helping them as a salesclerk. Doris was a faithful member at Williamsville Baptist Church for almost 80 years.

Doris is survived by her sons, Hal Dean, Jr. (Mary) of Kosciusko, Mississippi and Tony Ray Dean (Carla) of Florence, Mississippi; daughters, Doris Faye Dean Johnson (A.J.) of Kosciusko, Mississippi and Diane Dean “Dinky” Cook (John) of Brandon, Mississippi; sister, Sarah Allbritton of Raymond, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Shirley Buford of Byram, Mississippi; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Irvin Buford and Plummie Crowell Buford, husband, Hal Clark Dean, Sr. son, James Wayne Dean (Infant), grandsons, Jeffery Scott Dean and Thomas Clark Dean, granddaughter, Cindy Johnson, brothers, Doyle Buford and Howard Buford, sisters, Jane Johnson, Mary Roberts, and Margie Atchison.

Freddie Bell Hearon

Freddie Bell Hearon, 86, of Ethel, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at her residence. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Jordan Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Stonewall Cemetery. Rev. Matt Steed will officiate the services.

Freddie was born on August 19, 1939, to Fred Glass McWhorter and Buna Bell McWhorter in Attala County, Mississippi. She grew up as a farmer’s daughter in Ethel, enjoying the simple country life where she attended Ethel Schools. Freddie married Charlie (J.D.) Hearon and spent 57 years together building a beautiful life together in Ethel with their family. She never missed a moment to show love and kindness, and to take pride in her flowers and her work. She also loved hummingbirds and feeding the wildlife.

Freddie was a member of Ethel Baptist Church, where she served as the church secretary for 25 years, and Eastern Star (Lodge in Ethel). She worked for Durant Sportswear for 20 years before going to work with the United States Postal Service. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years, showing how much she cared about and was dedicated to the community and country she lived in. Freddie will be remembered by her family as a Jesus-loving, wonderful, sweet, honest, caring, compassionate, attentive, loving, patient, and beautiful daughter, sister, wife, mom, and grandmother.

Freddie is survived by her sons, Randy (Jan) Hearon of Ethel, and Andrew (Linda) Hearon of Kosciusko; grandchildren, Randy C. (Dana) Hearon, Jr., Juston Drake Hearon, Charles (Angel) Clemons, Crystal Belle (Robby) Thornton, and Adam Stone Hearon; and brother, James Pinkney McWhorter of Pearl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred McWhorter and Buna Bell McWhorter, her husband, Charlie (J.D.) Hearon, great-granddaughter, Danielle Ables, sister, Sarah, and sister-in-law, Barbara McWhorter.
