We are located in the Old Providence Baptist Church, next to the Kirby-Hill House. Extensive collection of books, records, family and county histories, microfilm, and online research materials. Come to a meeting and see what we are all about. If you would like to be a member, the annual dues are $20 for an individual or $25 for a family. Each meeting there is a drawing for members for research on

your family ancestor of choice, one month research if you are not present, and two months research if you are at the meeting. It's a great way to learn more about your ancestors. Occasionally, there are fascinating genealogical or historical presentations by guest speakers. In addition to preserving the old church building that houses the library, HCGS members and volunteers are currently restoring the old 1916 Hardin County State Bank Building which will be home to the new Museum of Hardin County.

Upcoming Hardin County Genealogical Society Meeting
Saturday, August 8th

Joy Renee Montgomery will be our guest speaker. She is a historian, museum professional, genealogist, and PhD candidate specializing in regional, Indigenous, and cultural history in Texas and the American South. She currently serves as a Historical Consultant with the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, where her work focuses on tribal history, preservation initiatives, archival research, and public education.
Montgomery previously served as Executive Director of the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County in Conroe, Texas, coordinating exhibits, grants, historical preservation projects, and outreach programs dedicated to the histories of Indigenous, women, and minority communities.
Her career has also included leadership with the Texas Center for Regional Studies, where she co-authored historical publications and organized heritage tours and cultural programs throughout Texas and Tennessee.
Montgomery holds graduate degrees from Sam Houston State University and additional training in Strategic Foresight from the University of Houston. Her academic and professional work bridges public history, genealogy, oral traditions, archaeology, and archival preservation. She has collaborated with numerous museums, historical commissions, and Native heritage organizations, including projects connected to the Cherokee Trail of Tears and Southeastern tribal history.

Historian Dickie Dixon to Present on Old Stone Fort at May 9 Genealogical Society Meeting

KOUNTZE — The Hardin County Genealogical Society will welcome Hershel Harry “Dickie” Dixon, Jr. as the featured speaker for its upcoming meeting on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The program begins at 10 a.m. at the Genealogy Library, located at 220 West Main Street in Kountze. The event is free and open to the public.
Dixon, a native of Lufkin and a sixth generation Texan, will present on the historic Old Stone Fort located on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. The structure, long associated with early Texas history, remains a point of interest for researchers, educators, and visitors alike.
According to the biographical information provided, “A native of Lufkin, Texas, Dickie Dixon is a sixth generation Texan” and “a graduate of Angelina College… [and] Stephen F. Austin State University.”
Dixon’s academic background includes an Associate of Arts in Business Administration from Angelina College (1971), a Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science from Stephen F. Austin State University (1973), and a Master of Theology in Old Testament Literature and Exegesis (Hebrew) from Dallas Theological Seminary (1985). He is the father of two daughters and grandfather to eight grandchildren, and has spent most of his life in Lufkin.
Beyond his academic and historical interests, Dixon has been deeply involved in community service. He has served as president of the Angelina County Genealogical Society for 16 years and has dedicated 22 years to jail ministry, including the last five as coordinator overseeing 15 male and 15 female ministers. “He has served in jail ministry for the last 22 years… as the jail ministry coordinator,” the document notes.
He also serves as vice president of the Deep East Texas Archeological Society in Newton, a role he has held for 21 years.
The Hardin County Genealogical Society invites residents, history enthusiasts, and researchers to attend this informative program and learn more about one of East Texas’s most storied landmarks.

The regular monthly meeting of Hardin County Genealogical Society is TOMORROW, Saturday, April 9, at the Genealogy Library in Kountze. Business meeting starts at 10:00am. After the meeting, we will carpool to Silsbee for a guided tour of the Ice House Museum. The museum will provide a space for us to have lunch. Please bring finger foods to share.
