Pre-planning doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start by asking yourself these 7 questions:

1. What service do I want?
2. Where do I want my final resting place to be?
3. What kind of service feels right: traditional, celebration of life, or something in between?
4. Is there music, readings, or a location that's meaningful to me?
5. Who do I want involved in the planning?
6. Have I told my family what I want?
7. Is there anything I definitely don't want?

You don't need all the answers right now. But starting the conversation, even with yourself, is the first step.

Have questions? We're here to help whenever you're ready.

Max Prout, who was born to Raymond and Faye Prout of Joseph, Oregon, was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and pillar of Wallowa County, passed away peacefully on May 28th, 2026. A man whose life was defined by quiet strength, hard work, and a profound commitment to his community, Max leaves behind a powerful legacy of service.

Born in Joseph, Oregon, Max grew up with a deep respect for the land, his family, and western traditions. He honorably served his nation with distinction in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. After his military service, Max returned home to dedicate his life to building up the community he loved so dearly. From being the Mayor of Joseph, to maintenance for the Joseph schools.

Max’s heart belonged to the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo. Alongside his brother, Gary Prout, and sister-in-law, Karen Prout, Max was deeply honored to serve as a Grand Marshal for the 2023 celebration. His involvement with the rodeo spanned decades, continuing a family legacy that began in 1946.
