“On one side, there's still a belief that you can't be successful or high-achieving and have ADHD,” she says. “That if a student is getting good grades, they must not have a 'real' problem.”

Thank you Dr. Liz Stone of Top Tier Admissions for including me in this important article.

Rising ADHD diagnoses among top students may reflect better recognition, not higher rates, as academic demands expose hidden challenges and burnout.

It’s much more likely but I can’t tell you an exact likelihood…

Because there are many different genes involved in ADHD rather than only one.

So if you have ADHD and have concerns that your child also has ADHD because of it, it’s important to watch for signs, connect with your pediatrician, and seek out an evaluation if you’re concerned.

If your high school student is heading to college in the fall, take a look at the documentation they may need for accommodations before they leave.

In my experience as a psychologist, schools vary a lot in the type of documentation they need to document a diagnosis of ADHD and why accommodations may be beneficial for your teen in college.

I’ve even seen some schools require a full comprehensive evaluation within the past two years including cognitive and academic achievement testing.

Some of what this article talked about isn’t new, and there are 3 presentations of ADHD.

And it’s very likely that ADHD’s neurobiological underpinnings are heterogeneous and varied.

I always appreciate seeing more about emotion regulation included when talking about ADHD, and it’s something parents are always talking about.

What did you think of the article?

I’ve seen a few other creators make videos on this too so make sure to check out their videos!

In case you are wondering what a comprehensive evaluation can look like for kids and teens, here’s what ny process looks like as a child psychologist.

If your child has ADHD or you’re concerned they may have ADHD, a comprehensive evaluation can give you a better understanding of their strengths, the areas to support, and any concerns outside of ADHD to be addressed.

After the testing is done, I meet with families to go over the results and individualized recommendations.

I am currently accepting new clients for evaluations in California.

Schedule a complimentary 15-minute phone call to determine if it’s the right fit for your family.
