"Everything looks normal."

Those four words have reassured millions of people. They've also left many wondering why they still don't feel well.
One of the biggest misconceptions in healthcare is that normal means healthy. It doesn't.

Laboratory reference ranges are designed to help detect disease. They're incredibly valuable, but they don't necessarily define your personal best.
Many of the earliest signs of declining health don't begin with a diagnosis. They begin with subtle changes. You don't recover from exercise the way you used to. Your sleep becomes lighter. Your thinking feels just a little slower. Your motivation isn't what it once was.

These aren't reasons to panic. They're invitations to pay attention.
One of my favorite concepts in longevity medicine is physiologic reserve, your body's ability to adapt to stress. When that reserve is strong, you bounce back quickly. When it gradually declines, life starts to feel harder long before disease ever develops.

That's why I believe the future of medicine isn't simply treating illness. It's protecting vitality.

The goal isn't to become obsessed with testing. The goal is to understand your biology well enough to preserve what matters most. Your energy. Your independence.

Your curiosity. Your ability to fully enjoy your life.
Because health was never meant to be measured only by what disease you don't have. It's measured by what your body still allows you to do.

The sun is powerful medicine, and powerful medicine deserves respect.
We need light. We need morning sun, vitamin D, circadian rhythm, mood support, and time outside.

But our skin also remembers UV damage.

The wise middle is where health lives: morning light, shade, mineral sunscreen, hats, skin checks, vitamin D testing, and outdoor pleasure without unnecessary damage.

Not rigid. Not reckless.
Alive, informed, sensual, intelligent, and built for longevity.

That is Healthy Hedonism in practice.

Sun protection is not fear.
It is self-respect.

Wear the hat. Choose the shade. Use the sunscreen. Reapply when needed. Check your skin. Test your vitamin D. Enjoy the morning light and respect the noon sun.

A sun-smart life still has beach walks, sailing days, patio lunches, gardening, travel, and golden evenings outside.

It just also has a hat.

Know the ABCDE rule for suspicious spots:
A - Asymmetry
B - Border irregularity
C - Color variation
D - Diameter or growth
E - Evolving

That last one matters most. If a spot is changing, itching, bleeding, growing, or simply looks different from the others, get it checked.
This is not about fear. It is about early awareness.

Your skin is speaking. Learn its language.

We are delighted to share a new review of Dr. Erica Oberg’s book, Healthy Hedonism, published by Great Books Great Minds.

The central message of Healthy Hedonism is simple but powerful. A healthy life does not have to be defined only by sacrifice, restriction, and discipline. Joy, pleasure, positive emotion, meaningful relationships, movement, and memorable experiences can also support our health and longevity.

We are grateful to Diamond-Michael and Great Books Great Minds for taking the time to read the book and share their perspective.

Not all light is the same.

UV light can damage skin and increase skin cancer risk when exposure is excessive. But morning light helps regulate circadian rhythm, and red or near-infrared light may support mitochondrial function and tissue repair.

The goal is not to avoid light.
The goal is to understand it.

Morning light. UV protection. Darkness at night. Therapeutic light when appropriate.
That is intelligent exposure.

Not all sunscreens are created equal.

Different countries approve different sunscreen filters, and Europe has had access to some newer broad-spectrum options that have been slower to become available in the United States.

That does not mean every European sunscreen is perfect or every American sunscreen is harmful. It means we should be thoughtful.

Read labels. Look for broad-spectrum protection. Consider mineral formulas like zinc oxide. And remember that hats, shade, sunglasses, and clothing still matter.

The goal is not fear of the sun.
The goal is intelligent exposure.

Could pleasure be part of the prescription for better health?

I recently joined Rancho La Puerta for a beautiful conversation on the Resonate podcast about pleasure, joy, connection, creativity, nature, vitality, and longevity.

Wellness is often framed around discipline, restriction, and sacrifice. Healthy habits matter, but so do the experiences that make life feel rich, meaningful, and connected.

Joy is not frivolous. Pleasure is not the opposite of health. Feeling good may be an essential part of feeling well.

Watch the full conversation below.

I usually prefer mineral sunscreens, especially zinc oxide-based formulas.

Not because every chemical sunscreen is "bad," but because mineral sunscreens are simple, effective, and often a better fit for people who want broad-spectrum protection with fewer concerns about absorption.

Also: not burning does not always mean your skin was protected. UVA damage can happen quietly.

Use sunscreen, but do not make it do all the work. Hats, shade, sunglasses, and clothing matter too.
