Some losses don’t come with casseroles, sympathy cards, or a clear ending — yet they carry a deep emotional weight. As seasons shift and routines reset, many adults feel a quiet heaviness they can’t explain. That heaviness is often ambiguous loss, a form of grief that comes from transitions without closure.

In her newest blog, Ashli King, LPC‑S, explores how life changes like empty nesting, caregiving, relocation, or shifting identities impact both the mind and the body. Ambiguous loss isn’t “small” or “not that serious.” It’s real grief — and your nervous system feels every part of it. Ashli offers somatic practices, EMDR insights, and gentle rituals to help you honor what’s changing and support your body through the transition.

🌳 You’re allowed to grieve the chapters that didn’t end with a goodbye.

August is National Wellness Month, a reminder that wellness isn’t about perfection — it’s about small, intentional choices that support your mind, body, and emotional health. Wellness grows through consistency, boundaries, community, and honest self‑reflection.

This month, Reginald Lemelle, LPC‑S, TF‑CBT, encourages you to slow down, check in with your body, and choose one sustainable habit that helps you feel grounded. Wellness is not a destination — it’s a daily practice of caring for yourself with compassion and intention. 🌳✨

“Just get over it” is one of the most harmful messages people hear after experiencing trauma. If you’ve ever tried to move on logically but still felt panic, heaviness, or constant tension, there’s a scientific reason: trauma isn’t stored in your thoughts — it’s stored in your brain and nervous system.

In her latest blog, Brandi Collins, LPC, explains how trauma rewires the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, and how the nervous system can become stuck in fight, flight, or freeze. Healing isn’t about forcing yourself to be stronger — it’s about helping your body understand that the threat is finally over.

Brandi offers practical, bottom‑up tools that calm the nervous system and support real, lasting recovery. 🌿 Your reactions aren’t weakness. They’re biology — and biology can heal.

Self‑Awareness Month invites us to slow down and pay attention to the inner world we often rush past.

Self‑awareness isn’t about perfection or constant self‑monitoring — it’s about learning to recognize your emotional patterns, your body’s signals, and the needs you’ve been carrying quietly. When you understand yourself more fully, you regulate more effectively, communicate more clearly, and make choices that align with your wellbeing. It’s not always comfortable work, but it is deeply liberating.

This month Reem encourages you to give yourself permission to pause, reflect, and listen inward. Your inner world deserves your attention.

To schedule a session with Reem, call our office at (337) 703-2806.

Back‑to‑school season brings a unique kind of pressure for first responder and public‑safety families. While most households settle into predictable routines, shift work, 24‑hour rotations, and the physiological toll of high‑stress duties make August feel heavier, faster, and more overwhelming.

In her newest blog, Amanda Maldonado Reed, LPC, CIC‑Csp, explores how hypervigilance, broken sleep, emotional fatigue, and missed milestones impact parents who wear the badge — and offers trauma‑informed, somatic strategies to help families stay connected, regulated, and supported.

From tactical co‑parenting tools to nervous‑system resets and relationship‑protective rituals, this guide is designed specifically for the families who serve our community every day.

🌳 Your service matters. Your family’s wellbeing matters. And you deserve support that understands both.

Today we honor the brilliance, resilience, and creativity of our youth.

International Youth Day is a reminder that young people aren’t just “the future” — they are leaders, thinkers, creators, and change‑makers right now.

To every teen finding their voice, navigating big emotions, or learning who they are becoming: 🌳 Your feelings matter. 🌳 Your ideas matter. 🌳 Your growth matters.

At Tree of Life Counseling & Consulting, we’re committed to supporting youth with compassion, safety, and spaces where they can be fully seen and fully themselves.

Here’s to the young minds shaping our world with courage and heart. 💚✨

Trauma doesn’t just live in your thoughts — it lives in your body. You can understand a situation logically and still feel your heart race, your jaw tighten, or your chest sink. That’s because trauma is a physiological event, not just a memory.
In my latest blog, Aureyon Conner, LPC, breaks down the difference between EMDR and Somatic Experiencing, two evidence‑based trauma therapies that help the nervous system release what talk therapy alone can’t reach.

EMDR reorganizes traumatic memories, so they stop hijacking your present. Somatic Experiencing helps your body discharge stored survival energy and return to balance. For many clients, the most powerful healing happens when these approaches are combined — honoring both the mind and the body.

🌳 Your nervous system is capable of healing. You don’t have to stay stuck in fight, flight, or freeze.
