Good morning friends,
It gives us immense pleasure to introduce you to our small family farm, Indian Bayou Provisions. Owned and operated by Lauren and Taylor Hargave in Indian Bayou, Louisiana, our goal is to provide our local community with a variety of homegrown fresh and preserved fruits & vegetables, herbs for culinary uses or tea, and quail eggs. What began years ago in a subdivision with a small garden and a few potted fruit trees has now grown into an ecologically minded, sustainable farm that can provide more than we can consume ourselves. Our farm is in its infancy. Unlike most annual crops that are sown and harvested in a single growing season, most of our plants are perennials which can take years to reliably produce a crop year after year. This gives us great enthusiasm about what our future may hold. In the next several weeks, check back here for updates on the farm and current inventory with prices. Local pick-up and delivery can be arranged via any of the contact options listed on this page. We sell directly to consumer only.
Here are few things that we believe in:
· Seasonality – Just like the landscape changes with the seasons, so do most of our crops. We preserve crops when a fresh harvest is abundant, but we will not outsource to continue to provide fresh items if it is not in season locally.
· Diversity – We are not a monoculture farm specializing in a single crop. This does lower our yield of any given single crop, but also allows us to provide a wider variety of products and lowers disease pressure on the farm as a whole.
· Ecology – Our farm is not entirely delegated to food production. We have areas set aside as woodland, wetland, and native tallgrass prairie. This encourages flora and fauna to take up residence, improves soils, and reduces erosion.
· Simplicity – We grow crops that thrive in our climate. Old Southern favorites like figs, muscadines, okra, mulberries, and the list goes on. Where we may deviate from this principle slightly is with our cultivar choices. We grow many different varieties of fruits, herbs, and vegetables that you may not be as familiar with. While you may have eaten figs for many years, some of our varieties may be new to you.
· Limitations – We cannot compete with large scale commercial producers. Our plants and animals are meticulously cared for by hand in the offseason all the way through peak production in the warmer months. This limits our yield but also ensures the highest quality that we can achieve. We are not a grocery store, but we
are a local family interested in sharing our harvests with people that appreciate hard work, clean food, and a sense of doing things the old-fashioned way.
Please consider following along with us and visiting our Facebook and Instagram pages for more information.
With love,
The Hargraves
