It all began with a call from Michiko’s school about her behavior. While her teachers wanted to support her, they struggled to find a way that kept her safe while honoring her love for learning. Overwhelmed and unsure how to help, her parents reached out to Child’s Play Therapy Services. From the very first contact, our team provided compassion, practical tools, and steady guidance-helping them feel supported and understood.

In 2023, Michiko began working with Elena Javier, MS, OTR/L.
Within just a few sessions, a shift began. Michiko was drawn in by Elena’s warm, calm, and empathetic presence, feeling truly safe, seen, and accepted for exactly who she is. Change wasn’t instant, but Elena’s unwavering patience and belief in Michiko never wavered. She became Michiko’s biggest cheerleader, offering her family-and her teachers-thoughtful strategies that made a daily difference.

Over time, Michiko learned to understand her emotions more clearly, use her words to express her needs, and even show flexibility when facing disappointment. She began to develop self-compassion, pride, and a deep belief in her own resilience.

Today, her family describes her journey with Elena as nothing short of transformative, a foundation for growth that will serve her for years to come. And even now, after two years, one of Michiko’s greatest joys each week is still seeing Ms. Elena.

Sensory play is more than just fun, it’s truly foundational for development. When children engage in activities that stimulate their senses, they build critical skills for learning, regulation, and daily life. From squishing play dough to swinging or exploring textures, these moments help the brain make important connections.

Occupational therapists often use sensory play intentionally to support children who may feel overwhelmed, under-responsive, or constantly seeking movement and input. Through guided activities, we help children better understand their bodies, improve focus, and feel more comfortable navigating their environment.

If your child seems sensitive to sounds, avoids certain textures, or is always on the move, sensory-based occupational therapy can help create balance and confidence in everyday routines.

We’re excited to share an important step forward in expanding care for children and families.

Earlier this year, Proficio Therapy Services and Child’s Play Therapy Services officially partnered to increase access to high-quality pediatric occupational therapy, speech support, and ABA services across California and Utah. This collaboration brings together a shared commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care, while continuing to prioritize individualized, child-centered support.

Through this partnership, Child’s Play Therapy Services will continue delivering the same trusted care families know and value, with their strong foundation in occupational therapy at the forefront. Their expertise in occupational therapy and collaborative speech support will extend across Proficio’s growing network, helping more children build skills in communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and daily life.

As we grow to 12 clinics (and counting), this partnership allows us to deepen our impact while staying grounded in connection, quality care, and meaningful outcomes for every child.

Let’s talk about fine motor skills.
From holding a crayon to buttoning a shirt, fine motor skills play a big role in a child’s independence. These small movements require strength, coordination, and control, and they don’t always come easily to every child.

In occupational therapy sessions, we break these skills down into manageable steps and use creative, play-based activities to build strength and confidence. Whether it’s through crafts, games, or hands-on challenges, children can develop the skills they need while still having fun.

Supporting fine motor development early can make a lasting impact on a child’s success in school and daily routines.

Sometimes the biggest wins don’t look big at all.

Buttoning a shirt. Holding a pencil. Trying a new food. Transitioning without a meltdown. These everyday moments are often where the most meaningful growth happens for children.

In occupational therapy, we focus on building the foundational skills that support independence, confidence, and participation in daily life. For many children, these tasks don’t come easily, and that’s where guided support, practice, and encouragement can make a lasting difference.

At Child’s Play Therapy Services, we celebrate the small steps, because they lead to bigger ones. Each moment of progress helps a child feel more capable, more confident, and more connected to the world around them.

If you’re noticing your child struggling with daily routines or skills, you don’t have to navigate it alone. We’re here to help support your child’s growth every step of the way.

April is Occupational Therapy Month! We’re so honored to be a part of so many families’ journeys and seeing firsthand the positive impact occupational therapy has on children and their families.

When we asked one parent what “success” looks like for their child, they shared: “To see my child happy and progressing each day… even small progress is a success.” In occupational therapy, we celebrate those moments, because growth isn’t always big or immediate, but it is always meaningful.

Another family shared how therapy has supported them over time: “I can’t imagine life without this place… with her sensory issues and fine motor skill regressions, we’ve been able to work through them here. It has been an amazing impact on our family.” Stories like these reflect the heart of what we do, supporting children in building skills, confidence, and connection in ways that carry into everyday life.

At Child’s Play Therapy Services, we are honored to walk alongside families in this journey. This month, we celebrate the power of occupational therapy, and the resilience, growth, and joy we see in every child.

Thank you for letting us be part of your child (and family)’s growth!

Play is one of the most effective ways children explore and regulate their sensory world.

Some children seek movement, touch, or sound, while others may feel overwhelmed by certain sensations. Through play, children can safely explore these needs while building the skills to better process and respond to sensory input.

In occupational therapy, we use play-based approaches to support sensory integration, helping children feel more comfortable in their bodies and more confident navigating their environment. Activities like swinging, jumping, messy play, or even quiet, focused tasks can all support regulation in different ways.

At Child’s Play Therapy Services, we meet each child where they are, using play to support development, build confidence, and create positive, meaningful experiences.

Silliness isn’t just fun, it’s an important part of how children learn, connect, and regulate.

In occupational therapy, we often use playful, silly moments to help children feel safe in their bodies and relationships. Laughter, imagination, and lighthearted play can support nervous system regulation, making it easier for children to shift out of stress and into a more calm, engaged state. When a child is relaxed and connected, they’re better able to focus, communicate, and try new things.

Being silly also helps build key developmental skills. It encourages flexibility, creativity, social connection, and emotional expression. Whether it’s making funny sounds, playing pretend, or turning a task into a game, these moments are doing meaningful work behind the scenes.

At Child’s Play Therapy Services, we believe growth doesn’t have to be serious to be effective. Sometimes, the most powerful progress happens through laughter, play, and a little bit of silliness.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month! Each April, we take time to recognize the impact occupational therapy has on individuals and families every day.

Occupational therapy supports people in building the skills they need for daily life, from fine motor development and sensory processing to feeding, self-care, and emotional regulation. For children, this often looks like learning through play, developing confidence, independence, and the ability to engage more fully in their world.

At our practice, we take a personalized, strengths-based approach to care. Whether a child is working on motor skills, navigating sensory challenges, or building routines, occupational therapy meets them where they are and helps them grow in ways that feel supportive and empowering.
