Minority Health Coalition of Tippecanoe at Hanna Center

Minority Health Coalition of Tippecanoe at Hanna Center Our objective is to target racial and ethnic minorities in the Greater Lafayette Area and its surrounding communities.

Target population are African American, Hispanic/Latino, and our two vulnerable groups, seniors, and children. The Hanna Health Initiative seeks to improve the health and well-being of its ever-growing population of racial and ethnic minority populations by implementing programs, services, and activities that aim to educate and make communities aware of targeted health priorities and steps that ca

n be taken to improve their overall health. Currently, minorities continue to suffer more from preventable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity, and diabetes than non-minorities. It is Hanna's Health program goal to implement programs and services to address topics to help reduce barriers while improving health outcomes. Nuestros objetivos son: incentivar el cuidado de salud oral, Prevenir las enfermedades cardiovasculares y prevenir la obesidad.

Life has a way of changing when we least expect it. Some seasons bring joy, while others bring uncertainty, loss, or challenges we never planned for.

It's okay if you're still adjusting. It's okay if you're healing. And it's okay if you're not where you thought you'd be.

Mental health isn't about pretending everything is fine—it's about giving yourself permission to feel, to grow, and to keep moving forward one step at a time.

Take care of yourself. Reach out when you need support. Celebrate the small victories. Be patient with your progress.

Every new chapter brings an opportunity to become stronger, wiser, and more compassionate—not just toward others, but toward yourself.

You are not defined by the changes you've faced. You are defined by the courage it takes to keep going.

💚 Be kind to yourself today. Someone else may need your kindness too.

🍎📚 A New School Year. A Fresh Start. A Reminder to Be Kind—to Yourself and Others. 💚

As students head back to school, remember that not everyone carries the same backpack. Some are carrying excitement, while others may be carrying anxiety, fear, loneliness, or uncertainty.
This school year, let's make mental health a priority by:

💙 Checking in with friends.
💚 Asking for help when you need it.
💛 Taking breaks and practicing self-care.
🧡 Choosing kindness, patience, and compassion.
💜 Remembering that it's okay to not be okay.

Parents, teachers, caregivers, and classmates all play an important role in creating safe, supportive spaces where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Together, we can build classrooms where everyone belongs and every student has the opportunity to thrive.

✨ Your mental health matters.
✨ Your feelings are valid.
✨ You are never alone.

Wishing all students, educators, and families a healthy, successful, and joy-filled school year! 🌟

💗 Maternal Mortality Matters 💗

Every mother deserves the chance to watch her child grow.

The United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among high-income countries, and many of these deaths are preventable. Too many women—especially Black and Indigenous mothers—face barriers to quality prenatal care, timely treatment, and respectful healthcare.

Together, we can make a difference by:
🤍 Encouraging early and consistent prenatal care.
🤍 Listening to and believing mothers when they express concerns.
🤍 Supporting access to quality healthcare before, during, and after pregnancy.
🤍 Advocating for policies that improve maternal health and save lives.

Pregnancy doesn't end at delivery—maternal health continues through the postpartum period. Awareness, education, and community support can help ensure every family has a healthy beginning.

Let's work toward a future where every pregnancy is safer, every mother is heard, and every life is valued.

Here are some practical mental health tips for July, when longer days, heat, travel, and changing routines can affect how you feel:

Stay hydrated. Dehydration can contribute to fatigue, headaches, and irritability. Drink water consistently, especially if you're outdoors.
Get outside early or late. If it's very hot, spend time outdoors in the morning or evening. Natural light and fresh air can support mood without the stress of peak heat.

Keep a flexible routine. Summer schedules often change. Maintaining regular sleep, meals, and movement can help you feel more balanced.
Protect your sleep. Longer daylight hours can make it harder to wind down. Consider limiting bright light late in the evening and keeping a consistent bedtime.

Make time for connection. Reach out to friends or family for a walk, picnic, or phone call. Social connection can support emotional well-being.
Take breaks from social media. Summer posts can create pressure to compare your experiences with others'. It's okay to step away if it isn't helping you.

Move your body. Gentle activities like walking, swimming, cycling, or stretching can improve mood and reduce stress.

Practice mindfulness. Spend a few minutes each day noticing your surroundings, breathing deeply, or writing in a journal.

Set realistic expectations. You don't need to make every summer day "perfect." Rest is just as valuable as staying busy.

Check in with yourself. Ask yourself: How am I feeling today? What do I need right now? Regular self-reflection can help you notice when you might benefit from extra support.

Infant mortality is the death of a baby before their first birthday. While many infant deaths are preventable, improving outcomes requires collaboration among healthcare providers, community organizations, families, and local leaders.

Why It Matters
Healthy pregnancies and healthy babies build healthier families and stronger communities. By investing in maternal health, prenatal care, and infant safety, we can reduce preventable infant deaths and ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

What We Can Do
Receive Early Prenatal Care – Regular prenatal visits help identify health concerns early and improve pregnancy outcomes.

Practice Safe Sleep – Always place babies on their backs to sleep, alone, in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and no loose blankets or toys.

Support Maternal Health – Physical, mental, and emotional wellness before, during, and after pregnancy matters.

Increase Access to Care – Transportation, healthcare, nutritious food, and stable housing all contribute to healthier pregnancies.

Strengthen Community Support – Family, friends, healthcare providers, and community organizations play an important role in supporting parents.

Together we can:
-Promote healthy pregnancies.
-Educate families about safe sleep.
-Support parents before and after birth.
-Address barriers to healthcare and basic needs.
-Advocate for health equity for every family in Tippecanoe County.

For local maternal and child health resources, contact the Tippecanoe County Health Department, local healthcare providers, or dial 211 to connect with community services.

💚 Mental Health Matters 💚

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Take time to rest, recharge, and check in with yourself and those around you.

✨ Be kind to your mind.
✨ Ask for help when you need it.
✨ Talk about how you're feeling.
✨ Practice self-care without guilt.
✨ Remember: You are not alone.

Every conversation, act of kindness, and moment of support helps break the stigma surrounding mental health. Let's create a community where it's okay to ask for help and where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Take a deep breath. Give yourself grace. Better days are ahead. 💚
