World breastfeeding 2026 week's theme: Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start: strengthen what works.

What works is: access to lactation/medical care, consistent evidence based messaging, adequate time off to establish feeding and work through problems, workplace supports, paid leave.

That's not the situation most families have, unfortunately.

Then mothers are left feeling defeated, and worse...often blame themselves.

We lactation professionals are passionate about supporting families, but sometimes working in this dumpster fire of a context can feel draining.

If you have breastfed or tried to breastfeed in these circumstances and don't feel seen, I see you and I am proud of you.

This is me telling you to walk on the wild side and give simplicity a whirl. Often managing flow, feeding position, and other interventions are much more effective to manage reflux related discomfort and these particular things tend to exacerbate stress, but I find parents to be fearful of trying them! When it works well, it's kind of magical how much more time you find in your day. 😉

TLDR version: If your baby is gaining well from your breast milk alone, you have "normal", full supply. End of story.

Pump outputs + feeding volumes from the breast will vary a lot based on breast storage capacity and time of day.

If you're pumping somewhere from 3-5 oz to REPLACE a feed, you're probably pretty "average."

If your baby feeds 7-9 times at the breast (after the first few weeks--more frequent than this is normal at first and with growth spurts) and is gaining steadily, you're probably pretty average. If you're feeding less or more than this and gain is steady, it's probably a reflection of your breast storage capacity (higher or lower).

Pumping large quantities at once is NOT the average experience.

You don't need a giant freezer stash.

You're doing AWESOME.

Not meds, not tongue tie release, not thickener....not before checking these basics first.

Sometimes simple shifts are game changers.

Flourish Pediatric Therapy and Lactation opened 7 years ago today.

Time really flies.

Super grateful for the families who choose me to help them along and the providers who send them my way.

Opening a private practice remains one of the scariest leaps I ever made, and I have not regretted it for a second.

Celebrating from beautiful Pensacola today but I'll be back in office Tuesday!
