Even though we have the best intentions, we can find ourselves actually performing compulsions for our loved ones with OCD! Ways we are actually participating in compulsions for others and thus maintaining their OCD are: Waiting for them to complete compulsions, providing reassurance, actually doing the compulsion so they don’t have to get triggered, modifying family routines, or providing materials to aid in compulsions (like soap or cleaning products). Working with a therapist to gradually reduce accommodations made by family members or loved ones is best- ask your ERP trained therapist about how to go about this!

"You cannot think your way out of a compulsion. Reassuring yourself one more time, reviewing the evidence one more time, promising yourself this is absolutely, positively the last check, all of that feeds the same loop it's pretending to escape."

Body checking feels like caution, but it's a compulsion that fuels health anxiety. Learn why hypervigilance backfires and what actually helps.

Ever wonder what causes OCD? Here is what we know:

While, we still do not know the exact cause or causes of OCD, research suggests that differences in the brain and genes of those affected may play a role.

Can ERP be used for phobias? YES!!

We can change our relationship with our fears and anxiety by slowly exposing ourselves to feared items or situations — allowing greater freedom. We learn a new way to respond, one that overpowers the "old" way.

In phobias, it's common to avoid certain situations, seek excessive reassurance, or rely on safety behaviors. ERP works by slowly and systematically exposing ourselves to the things that trigger us. We can start small and build up to what feels more scary or triggering.

Alongside this, we work on changing our relationship to anxiety itself, practicing awareness and building new responses to discomfort along the way.
