😎Kids love to make their own custom-designed slime! They learn so much about following a recipe, doing their own measurements, and thinking critically when the color or consistency doesn't come out quite like they had hoped. They also get exposure to working with wet textures that some adults still find off-putting!

This kiddo decided to follow the FLUFFY SLIME recipe, which I have to admit is one of my personal favorites! PTLC parents, if you need a fun weekend picnic table activity, you can request a free copy of our Fluffy Slime recipe designed and created by Mrs. Allison!

What a thrill! I wish I could show you their faces after they complete the roll down the ramp! It's an expression of relaxed joy. Such a beautiful thing to see, especially from kids who work really hard all day to hold themselves together in a structured school environment.

How else does this fit with their therapy goals?
Rolling helps kids develop their sense of movement, balance, and spatial awareness. The heavy work of pushing the barrel back up the ramp provides proprioceptive input for body awareness and regulation. And helping friends while taking turns gives natural opportunities to work on communication, impulse control, and social skills.

We love activities that integrate novel movements, communication, time with friends, and problem-solving AND that end with RELAXED JOY!

🤩Meet Brenna! She has been an awesome addition to our Connections and Operations Staff! She is a senior at UL with hopes of becoming an SLP in the future. Brenna has been trained by our therapy staff to provide Connections sessions for handwriting practice and play/communication development. For any parent wishing to get their child some extra “practice” time with Brenna, she is available on Mondays and Wednesdays!

🎬PTLC loves our budding Movie Makers! They spend weeks-to-months coming up with their stories, planning out the characters, props, actors, and filming time, then finally getting to edit the film to its final product.

Here you see Movie Showing Day! It is a beautiful time when Movie Makers get to show off their hard work. They set up the room, offer a snack, and invite peers to see their fun creations. They answer questions from their audience and often offer autographs! It is not unusual for a friend/viewer to become very curious about movie making themselves after seeing the success of their peers.

While some of our Movie Makers use peer actors, this particular movie used puppets and voice overs to act out an original story line. Congratulations to all of our Movie Makers for doing a great job entertaining their audience!

🍕🍪Strong feeding therapists like Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Jaci C know that the best progress comes when food is the therapy tool used to help a child expand his or her diet. Non-food therapy tools cannot mimic the dynamic properties of food when it interacts with saliva and chewing in the mouth. Also, the child needs controlled and planned exposure to foods over a long period of time in order to feel safe, comfortable, and familiar.

😎It's so nice to have bearable temperatures now so that we can enjoy our back porch activities! Structured sports and being on teams can be tricky for some of our kiddos. Activities like this one help us practice not just specific ball skills, but also coordination with teammates, following rules, dealing with disappointment.....and so, so much more!

Here you see Mrs. Jaci C., one of our very flexible speech-language pathologists (SLPs), who can make therapy sessions productive at a table, on the loft, in the hideout, on the floor, or even moving about the room!

😉Comprehension refers to understanding words, intentions, and body language of the people and world around you. It is often overshadowed by the easier-to-notice expressive language milestones, such as talking and gesturing. Words are easier to count, but aren't always meaningful without strong comprehension.

If something seems off-track developmentally and you are having trouble putting your finger on it, consider your child's comprehension. This slideshow will provide you with some basic information about comprehension development for babies and toddlers. Even if your child is older, you should check out the examples. You may notice something that was tricky for him or her earlier in life, or might still be tricky now.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), also known as speech therapists, can help you identify whether or not your child has difficulties with any aspect of communication, including comprehension. 😉

🥰Play isn't a reward for doing therapy, it is the context in which therapy happens. It is the SLP's or OT's job to meet a child within their ideas or sensory needs, then create a path toward their challenge zone!

I'm always thrilled to watch these scenes play out. There are so many pretend play, narrative skills, idea-generation, and planning skills that can come from scenes like this one, where a connected therapist like Mrs. Shannon works in the just-right zone and the child is joyful and engaged.

Selective Mutism is a condition which makes it very difficult for some children to speak in certain situations, even though they are able to speak comfortably in other settings. It is not a choice or act of defiance.

"Angel" and her family have worked hard to help their daughter overcome this challenge. This week they shared her progress and their gratitude for Mrs. Kayla's support:

"I’m just so proud of Angel that I wanted to give you an update because we appreciate everything you have done for her. She went up to the principal this week, and told him a joke. She also won [an award] at school today and she is so proud of herself! Her teacher told me today that she was in disbelief when she found out that Angel had selective mutism because she finds her to be so talkative and outgoing.
Again, we are so thankful, and we attribute so much of her success and progress to you and your work with her! We are eternally grateful Kayla!"

Thank you to "Angel's" family for sharing this story with us and allowing us to share it with you, not only to celebrate their daughter's victory, but also to bring awareness to selective mutism and how it can be overcome.

If a child you know struggles to communicate in certain situations, you may find that an evaluation or consultation with a Speech-Language Pathologist could help. Mrs. Kayla has specific training and experience with selective mutism and could offer very helpful information and support.
