Tanning beds are not a safe alternative to the sun. They never were.❌

The World Health Organization classifies tanning beds as a Class 1 carcinogen, the same category as ci******es and asbestos.

A 2025 study published in Science Advances by researchers at Northwestern Medicine found that tanning bed use is linked to nearly a 3x increase in melanoma risk. Unlike sunlight, which primarily damages exposed areas, tanning beds cause melanoma-linked DNA mutations across nearly the entire skin surface.

If you tanned frequently earlier in life, this is your sign to schedule a full-body skin exam. Melanoma is highly treatable when caught early, but only if you’re being checked.
