About NAMI

Who We Are

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association

of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. What We Do

NAMI relies on gifts and contributions to support our important work:

We educate. Offered in thousands of communities across the United States through NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates, our education programs ensure hundreds of thousands of families, individuals and educators get the support and information they need. NAMI shapes national public policy for people with mental illness and their families and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to save mental health in all states. Our toll-free NAMI HelpLine allows us to respond personally to hundreds of thousands of requests each year, providing free referral, information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many. Public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks, successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding. NAMI works with reporters on a daily basis to make sure our country understands how important mental health is. (Taken from https://www.nami.org/About-NAMI which is the National Page)

Our Administrative Assistant, Beth Garrison, really gave it her all to strike out stigma at the Aviators game last night as she kicked off NAMI West Central Indiana’s nonprofit night. ⚾️✈️

A huge thank you to the Lafayette Aviators for welcoming us to the ballpark and allowing us to share NAMI West Central Indiana’s mental health resources with your baseball community. Special thanks to Ace for making us feel right at home on the field!

Why We Walk Wednesday: Raising money for NAMI West Central Indiana’s mental health programs. 💚💙

NAMIWalks isn’t just about raising awareness for mental health initiatives and inspiring change with our participants. We are working toward a fundraising goal of $50,000 to fund our programs and services right here in West Central Indiana.

Here are some tips on how to increase your fundraising efforts:
1. Start with a self-donation. People will be more invested in your campaign if they see that you are.
2. Get social and start a Facebook fundraiser.
3. Start a spare change jar in your office or business.
4. Share your why on social or customize your NAMIWalks page. Personal stories go a long way.

Every effort helps us get closer to our $50,000 goal and ensures more individuals and families can access the support they need.

Thank you so much to Dayton-Phoenix Group for welcoming us to today’s Lunch & Learn. 🍎

Our Executive Director, Sheri Moore, spoke about our crisis services, support and education programs, and upcoming community events. We always appreciate the opportunity to share NAMI West Central Indiana’s resources with our community.

We are grateful for local businesses that take time to learn about mental health and explore ways they can support their employees, coworkers, friends, and neighbors who may be facing mental health challenges. Together, we can help reduce stigma and ensure no one has to face their journey alone.

Why We Walk Wednesday: What is NAMIWalks?
💚🧠💙💚🧠💙💚🧠💙💚🧠💙💚🧠💙

NAMIWalks is a nationwide movement to end mental health stigma and expand access to mental health resources in communities across the country. Each local NAMI affiliate hosts a walk to bring together advocates, families, individuals with lived experience, and supporters who believe no one should face mental health challenges alone.

Funds raised through NAMIWalks directly support the programs and services provided by local NAMI affiliates, including support groups, educational classes, advocacy, presentations, and crisis resources for individuals with mental illness and their loved ones.

We are NAMI West Central Indiana — the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness serving Tippecanoe County and surrounding communities.

Our walk, NAMIWalks West Central Indiana, will take place on Saturday, October 3rd at Cason Family Park beginning at 9 am. The morning will include community connection, mental health advocacy, breakfast, coffee, and hope.

Come NAMIWalk with us. Registration is free: https://www.namiwalks.org/westcentralindiana

Hello, Mental Health Champions! 💚🧠✨

It is time to officially announce the date and location for NAMIWalks West Central Indiana 2026! We are so excited to share that we will be returning to Cason Family Park on Saturday, October 3rd as we come together as a community to support and advocate for mental health resources across our region.

This year, the walk will begin at 9 am, so come out around 8:15 am for our mental health-themed tailgate, breakfast, community connection, and to hear a powerful story from someone sharing their mental health journey.

NAMIWalks is all about inspiring change in our region. Coming together with the shared mission of ending mental health stigma for all is such a life-changing experience, and we do not want you to miss it.

Registration is FREE and is now open: https://www.namiwalks.org/westcentralindiana

Last year, you all carried us across the finish line and helped us reach our$50,000 fundraising goal. 💚 This year, we want to go even further, because mental illness is not going to wait, and neither should we when it comes to getting people the care and support they need.

That means it is time to start. 👀 Get those teams together, launch your Facebook fundraisers, share your “why", and help us make an even bigger impact across West Central Indiana. Every dollar raised helps provide free mental health support groups, education, advocacy, and crisis resources for individuals and families in our community.

AND this year, we are looking for the team with the BEST outfits. So, grab your coworkers, friends, classmates, book club, family members —whoever your people are— and show out for mental health advocacy.

And don’t worry… we officially have a rain location this year, so nothing is going to dull our shine on walk day.☔ If needed, the event will move just across the road to Klondike Middle School. We’ll confirm any weather updates on our socials during walk week.

Check out NAMI’s new publication highlighting state legislation aimed at improving access to mental health care. Throughout the brief, NAMI outlines strides being made nationwide in mental health policy while also providing recommendations for continued growth and advocacy in each sector.

One of Indiana’s highlighted mental health laws is Senate Bill 160, which entered Indiana into the Professional Counselors Licensure Compact. This allows licensed professional counselors in participating states to practice across state lines, including through telehealth services, helping expand access to care.

This brief also shows the potential for continued growth in mental health advocacy and policy within our state. After all, how can we fight for change if we do not know what needs to change?

Take time to educate yourself this Mental Health Awareness Month.
