Most people think of vitamin D as a bone health nutrient. It does much more than that.

Vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a typical vitamin. It influences gene expression, so it affects nearly every system in your body, including:

Immune function
Mood and brain health
Blood sugar balance
A healthy intestinal lining
Muscle health

That’s why I test every patient’s levels. Deficiency is common, especially in winter when we get less sun.

Always test first and work with your doctor before supplementing.

“Normal” isn’t always optimal.

Many labs consider vitamin D levels of 20 to 30 ng/mL to be within range. In my practice, I generally aim for 50 to 80, depending on the individual.

Vitamin D is essential for immune system support, and deficiency is very common, especially during Colorado winters when we get less sun.

Before you start supplementing, test first and work with your doctor. Some conditions, including kidney disease, parathyroid disorders and sarcoidosis, require extra caution with vitamin D.

Vitamin D is not just about bone health, it plays a major role in how well your immune system responds to viruses. Here in Colorado we get a lot of sun in summer, which means many people do not think to check their levels once fall hits, and that is exactly when they start to fall.

Takeaway, if you feel like you catch everything every winter, low vitamin D could be part of the picture. It is a simple lab to run, and an easy one to miss.

This is the time of year I start hearing the same thing from patients, everyone around me is sick and I am the one who always catches it.

Here is what I want you to know, a weak immune response is not just bad luck. Low vitamin D, gut imbalances, chronic stress, and undiagnosed nutrient deficiencies can all leave you more vulnerable heading into cold and flu season. Your gut alone houses a huge portion of your immune system, so if digestion has been off, that matters here too.

If you are already dreading getting sick again this fall, that is worth addressing now, not after it happens. Free discovery calls are open, link in bio.

One of the perks of an integrative medicine conference? The IV lounge. 😄

Between sessions I got a Myers' Cocktail with glutathione. It's a blend of vitamins and minerals like magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin C, plus glutathione, one of the body's key antioxidants. After long days of travel, lectures, and conference coffee, it was a nice way to take care of myself.

Just back from MBKS, the Microbiome Keynotes Symposium, and my brain is full in the best way. 🧠🦠

I spent the week learning from some of the top researchers and clinicians working on the microbiome. What struck me most was how much the science keeps confirming what I see in practice every day: the gut is connected to everything. Joints, skin, hormones, mood, immune health. It all traces back.

One talk dug into how inflammation affects joint health. It was a good reminder that the question isn't only "what's wrong with this joint?" but also "what's driving the inflammation in the first place?"

In over 90% of the cases I see, the root cause leads back to gut imbalances. Conferences like this help me bring the newest research into your care.

I'm so grateful to spend time with this community of practitioners who care so deeply about helping people heal. 💜

I have had patients with almost no burning or discomfort at all, but profound fatigue and unexplained anemia. Their gastritis was silent, but it was still quietly stealing their vitality in the background.

This is exactly why I do not just treat the symptom in front of me. I ask what else could be connected, because the body rarely gives us the full story in one complaint. If you have been dealing with fatigue that never fully lifts, this might be worth exploring."

Fill in the blank, the symptom I ignored the longest was ___.

Maybe it was bloating you assumed was normal. Maybe it was fatigue you chalked up to being busy. Maybe it was a headache pattern you just learned to live with. I ask because almost every patient I see has one symptom they carried for years before finally asking why.

Tell me yours in the comments, you might be surprised how many other people relate.

Could it be low iron or low B12, not just stress or bad sleep?

I cannot tell you how many patients come to me convinced their exhaustion is just their life right now, and it is often part of the picture, but not the whole picture. Low ferritin, low B12, and a struggling thyroid can all produce fatigue that no amount of coffee or extra sleep touches.

Standard bloodwork often checks the box without checking the full picture. I look deeper, link in bio if this sounds like you.

Something I talk about with almost every patient now, the foods quietly working against their gut without them realizing it.

Emulsifiers in packaged foods can thin the protective mucus layer in your gut. Sugar does not just feed you, it feeds the bacteria you do not want more of, which is part of why cravings can feel so hard to shake. And glyphosate residue on conventional grains and produce has been shown to disrupt the gut microbiome in ways we are still understanding.

None of this means fear every label. It means knowing what is actually working against you, and what to reach for instead. If you want a real plan built around your gut, not a generic one, link in bio for a free discovery call.
